Re: Oscars 2019
Despite some amusing moments, it was embarrassingly underwhelming for me, and I concur with those denouncing GREEN BOOK as this year's CRASH . It was a forgettable DRIVING MISS DAISY -esque feel-good race relations film whose background leading up to the awards was already full of issues, not the le...

R.I.P. STANLEY DONEN (1924–2019)
Stanley Donen, the last living director of the glorious Golden Age of Hollywood, has left us at 94. From choreographing the famous 'Alter Ego' dance number for Gene Kelly in COVER GIRL (1944) to TWO FOR THE ROAD and BEDAZZLED in 1967, he contributed some of the most unabashed joyful and memorable mo...

I love that the French release of the 4K-restored SEVEN CHANCES came with THE RAILRODDER. I hope the Eureka or Flicker Alley release will include it too whenever they get around to it.

Another forum mentioned that their 2019 Flicker Alley calendar mentions Pudovkin's THE END OF ST. PETERSBURG and STORM OVER ASIA in addition to MOTHER. I'm not sure whose calendar is more accurate or if there's only one, but this is lovely news if true.

So no ROSITA, RAMONA, or Pudovkin boxset (mentioned over a year ago) this year. Oh well. I was hoping they would get to release a major Pickford this year since SPARROWS and MY BEST GIRL have been being restored for over a year now, but alas.

Re: My 500 Silent Features
City Girl is an odd blind spot, since I've owned it forever, two different copies in fact. Sometimes something seems too important for casual viewing and so it never gets viewed . (This may offer some insight into the creation of Watch That Movie Night.) This is the same reason why there are many o...

Re: My 500 Silent Features
Very impressive, Mike! At first glance, the only thing that stood out in terms of what's missing would be Eisenstein's sensational STRIKE, Dovzhenko's ZVENIGORA and ARSENAL, Pudovkin's CHESS FEVER and MOTHER, Hitchcock's DOWNHILL (paired with THE LODGER on Criterion's release), and some Mary Pickfor...

This is literally a treasure trove of film history in one amazing collection, but it's only been released in France (for obvious reasons) thus far (and 2015 at that). I would love if someone could pick this up and provide English subtitles, as the restoration work for these looks immaculate. This d...

It's just been announced KINO Studio Classics will be releasing these classic British silents:
Underground (1928) – 4/23/19
Shooting Stars (1928) – 4/23/19
The Informer (1929) – 4/23/19
These had all only been BFI Region B releases until now. Wonderful news for wonderful films.

Re: December Star of the Month – Myrna Loy
I say, Bravo, Maliejandro, even though in this case I can't go there, as I like Myrna in most of her decades or phases. I love the scenes where she skewers the male ego. There are a lot of them, but she doesn't use a steamroller, as Bette or Joan might, which makes it all the sweeter. She often pla...

I wish the rest of Jean Arthur's celebrated screwball/romantic comedies would get the BD treatment sooner than later. I'm thinking of HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT, EASY LIVING, THE TALK OF THE TOWN, and THE MORE, THE MERRIER.

According to the new Criterion Collection New Year's drawing, we can confirm that, at the very least, SWING TIME will be released in 2019, which was an LD title for Criterion way back when, and could suggest a box set of restored Astaire/Rogers films on BD. It would only make sense since I doubt SWI...
