Re: Astaire/Rogers

I would actually love this. To be honest, the only film of theirs that I can watch (with pleasure) in its entirety is TOP HAT . However, before even considering a dance-numbers-only edition, I would rather Warner restore all their films and release an upgrade collection on BD. Virtually all of Gene ...

The project to restore and preserve Der Hund von Baskerville (1929) is a collaboration between Filmoteka Narodowa and the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, overseen by film preservationist Rob Byrne. This exciting rediscovery comes from an original 35mm Czech distribution print in near-mint condit...

Re: Pending releases from Flicker Alley

I was really hoping Flicker Alley would get around to announcing the release of those deluxe Blu-ray editions of Pudovkin’s MOTHER (1926), THE END OF ST. PETERSBURG (1927) and STORM OVER ASIA (1928), as was indicated to be happening in early 2018 (Silent Era still has this noted on the main page). I...

Re: Pending releases from Flicker Alley

I watched Fanchon the Cricket today. The story is run-of-the-mill but it is cool to see all three Pickfords on the screen together, and the restoration is really beautiful. However I have to complain about the music score. Who is choosing these ultra-modern scores? Do they think they’re attracting ...

I just saw this on Silent Sunday and I hope I live to see the day this one gets a 2K/4K restoration and release on its own. It certainly deserves it –– the score might be my favorite of Carl Davis, and I understand it's highly regarded.

Excellent news for those that were reluctant to purchase the recent expensive release of A TRIP TO THE MOON. Flicker Alley will be releasing Méliès: Fairy Tales in Color (1899-1909) available for purchase on December 18. https://images.static-bluray.com/movies/covers/222410_front.jpg?t=1542152272 TH...

This is fairly impressive list, though it seriously neglects Third World cinema (nothing from Cuba, no Lino Brocka, virtually nothing from Africa and Latin America). Touki Bouki is a fascinating film, but also quite disturbing and not the one from Africa I would think would be singled out above othe...

And the winning film, Seven Samurai, by the Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, was loved by critics everywhere – everywhere, that is, except for Japan. The six Japanese critics who voted didn’t go for a single Kurosawa film between them.

Re: The Official Talkies online deals thread

I just tried it for the Bergman collection (just for fun) and it's no longer valid. In any case, one can look at it as getting ahead (in terms of pre-orders, so long as our orders are honored) rather than saving. The code only allowed us to apply the flash sale deal to pre-orders that I believe will...

Re: The Official Talkies online deals thread

While this does indeed work, I will keep my fingers crossed my orders don't get cancelled or, worse, that the pre-orders I applied the discount to won't be charged anew at full price (since pre-orders are supposed to be exempt from flash sales). Hopefully, those that take advantage won't see anythi...

I don't know how or why this is happening, but . . . Last night, in anticipation of a 50% off flash sale at Criterion.com this week, I was trying several order combinations in my shopping cart on the website. Then, for the heck of it, I decided to play with several old promo codes to see if they wo...

After your first pick, I vote for Lon Chaney (Sr.) given the time of year. Or perhaps deeper cuts like Peter Lorre or Bela Lugosi.

Does the festival have a shop online, or only in person? I looked on their website, but didn't find anything indicating what they might have for sale.

Re: Ruan Ling-yu and Chinese Silent Cinema (1922–1935)

I'd never heard of Ruan Ling-yu prior to seeing Stanley Kwan's biopic Centre Stage , starring Maggie Cheung, in the early '90s at the Toronto International Film Festival. It might even have been under it's alternate title Actress at that point. The film included a few tantalizing glimpses of the re...

...Or the Three Stooges remake. I thought the comedy movie was kind of fun. It did a decent job of presenting the characters in a modern context. That 3 Stooges docudrama was abysmal though. I think my problem is that I love the characters. I don't want to see the angst they went through off screen...

I will go see this without hesitation, but I am really not digging the soap opera vibe I am picking up.
