Unfortunately, that about sums it up. I believe this was screened in London in 2017. But yes it's in a private collection.some eccentric private collector is sitting on this and will never (in his lifetime) allow it to be Kickstarted, commercially released or downloaded for free.

Re: What’s The Last Silent Movie You Watched ? (2023)
Alias Jimmy Valentine (1928) is famous for being MGM's first foray into talkies (goat-glanded the last two reels) and for being lost. While the complete film is, so far, lost, a 9.5mm 40-minute cut-down exists and I've been privileged to see it. As for the Vitaphone soundtrack, I believe a few bits...

Reds (1981) is a sprawling and lush romantic drama staring Warren Beatty as the revolutionary John Reed. Beatty also produced, directed and co-wrote the film. At 195 minutes, it thankfully has an intermission, and the old DVD I have is on two disks. Also starring is Diane Keaton as Louise Bryant, a...

The Birdcage (1996) seems more timely than ever, what with current political nonsense making drag shows the epicenter of evil. Based on the French farce La Cage aux Folles (1978) ... the highest-grossing foreign language film in the US at the time ... the American version seems to lose that giddy s...

Re: Mary MacLaren on "To Tell the Truth" (1974)
Sort of disappointing that the audience was laughing during the clip. When McLaren returned to acting in the 30s she would have been a contemporary of Kitty Carlisle. Too bad they couldn't have shown a scene from something less theatrical, like Shoes. Hearts and Flowers definitely did not help. I s...

Richard E. Grant turns in a great performance in The Lesson (2023) as a egomaniacal writer who hires a tutor for his son so he can get into a top college at Oxford. There's also a rather distant wife in the background, and the tutor enters a bizarre and remote world where the only other person on th...

House of Dark Shadows (1970) is a film version of the popular TV show and stars Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins the vampire. Cheesy in every way, this one has Barnabas locked up in the ruins of a Maine mansion but he's unlocked by a dumb caretaker (John Karlen) who thinks he's found treasure. Oop...

On Quality Street (1927) the principal occupation is gossip. Doctor Conrad Nagel is courting Marion Davies. But Napoleon is threatening, and so Nagel marches off to war. Vogues of 1938 (1937) stars Warner Baxter and Joan Bennett is a very long (110 minutes) mish-mash of fashion shows, musicals numbers and a slim plot about a bad marriage and industrial spying in a fashion house. Filmed in color (now a tad washed out), Max Factor created a new line of make-up specif...

Several have already discussed The Steel Trap (1952) but I only now got around to watching it. Joseph Cotten plays a bank officer in Los Angeles who lives life by the book. It's 1952 and America is settling into its placid 1950s suburban phase. Cotten has a good job, a nice car (looks like a 1950 Fo...

From review I found, it was well received. It may or may not have been a hit of itself, but it returned Charles Ray to being a hit and he continued as a box office star for the rest of the silent era with hits like with films like Paris, Nobody's Widow, The Fire Brigade and The Garden of Eden. (supp...

This is certainly not the first time I've seen an American silent, sourced from a foreign print, with one or more acts of violence excised, even if the deletion leaves the narrative in a state of confusion. Yup. The Russian print of The Valley of the Giants deletes a few scenes that deal with the m...

We will see what the new curation “team” of Scorsese, Spielberg, Anderson, De Luca, and Abdy come up with when they’re not busy with day jobs producing movies. PTA has selected five films airing this month that he considers recommended viewing: His Kind Of Woman (1951) Night Ambush (1957) Diner (19...
