There was a video on youtube that had a police officer being interviewed by Connie Chung. He was on the scene at the 1922 murder of William Desmond Taylor and he claims they did find Mary Miles Minter's monogram panties in Taylor's apartment , he also believed it was Mary's mother who killed Taylor...

Greenbriar Picture Shows had a post about one CBS late night showing of A Night in Casablanca, and people came out of the woodwork just to say, hey, I was there too, I watched it that night. (Guess what I was doing that night, of course. I'm sure many of you were too.) Will there be touchstone mome...

In Praise of Not Knowing

Thought this article, In Praise of Not Knowing might strike a chord with people on this group who grew up in the 1960s/70s. It reminded me of endlessly pouring over The Silent Clowns as a kid and sometimes having to wait decades to see a film described in it. Now most of the stuff is sitting in DVDs...

Let's not forget Groucho Marx doing deodorant commercials, on second thought let's forget them.

What is the earliest movie star biopic?

The Jukebox includes recordings from the extraordinary collectio...

Why would a 1931 film now be cropped on left hand side?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought if an early sound film appeared cropped on the left hand side it was because the film was originally sound on disk and when the soundtrack was later added to the film then the soundtrack would claim some of the image. But what would explain cropping happening to...

Re: What is the prize item in your collection?

Could be a 16mm print, a book, a piece of memorabilia? Mine would have to be the 1932 bio of Lillian Gish by Albert Bigelow Paine that someone here graciously gave to me. Didn't think I would ever find it. I have some cast member portraits done by the still photographer on The Cocoanuts and I also ...

Sunnyside Up - Marjorie White's eyes

Marjorie White looks like she is blind in Sunnyside Up but in other films, say Diplomaniacs for example, her eyes register darker.

Is this an example of orthochromatic vs pancromatic film? Was there a timeframe where it was optional to use either film stock?

Don't forget Groucho for pretty much any post 1972 appearance, especially when wearing that suit made out of jeans. Watching that stuff is heartbreaking and infuriating. I remember seeing a clip of George Burns in his 90s in which he was described as 'dancing'. It barely passed for walking in my vie...

It is also a stretch on co-incidence that Groucho comes up wearing the same moniker later on. By 1927-8 Hollywood would have been on the conciousness of Broadway. Talking and musical stars were starting to go west. There would have been concern, scorn and jealousy. I have been looking into the lyri...

Twenty Minutes of Love - Isn't it more like ten?

Why is this film called 20 when the run time would be closer to 10 or 15? Is the title referring to something in popular culture at the time?

Yes, that's one of the perks of being a developer, you get to name streets. Lots of streets end up getting named after the developer's children.

The comparison of an interlaced video signal and step printing is still incomprehensible to me. This is what I meant by my comparison: Sound film and video have a fixed frame rate that may be too fast for a silent film (which can run at any speed). So in those cases a method needs to be developed t...

FWIW I do playback via a Sony Playstation 3. When freeze framing I do not get the interlacing.

On a separate note, the PS3 lets you playback at pretty much any speed above 1x if you wish (by means of a joystick to set speed). For speeds below 1x, there are increments of 1/7th.

Interesting talk on Interlacing. While reading through this I started to think "Is Interlacing on DVD the equivalent of stretch printing on film?" Is that a fair analogy?

However when I think of stretch printing I think of herky-jerky motion and I don't see that on the DVD.... why not?

The Chief (1933) - Where is Mickey Rooney?

Wow, I used to think I'd never see a more grating comedy than Everything's Rosie. I now stand fully corrected. I'm in awe that this film was actually released. It almost looks like they just threw in the towel at the end and did the closing scene at the radio broadcast in order to stop spending mone...
