Re: John H. Collins - Wow!
Kevin Brownlow's series HOLLYWOOD pays tribute to Collins in (I think) the first episode and offers clips from a one or two of his films. The tragedy of a talent who died young (the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1917-18). You're correct. I just happened to be reading the 'Preface' today where Kevin descr...

Re: What's The Last Silent Movie You Watched? [2020]
Here's one I discovered years ago. I spent a few minutes on YouTube, looking at "Up The Ladder" (1925) , a favorite romantic drama starring Virginia Valli. I had only found it without sound in the past and was hoping to find a copy with music. You've probably never seen this gem. There are several c...

Seemed an appropriate time to also have a gander at 1924's The City Without Jews ( Die Stadt ohne Juden ), and I was floored by it. Though only a year beyond The Jew of Mestri it's a much more polished production although about a thousand times more chilling, particularly the shots of the exiled Je...

Having watched "Where Now Are the Dreams of Youth" recently, it's clear Jacquiline Stewart wasn't familiar with the film's real story before it aired. It's a good film with a modern 'westernized' story. The music I used wasn't Oriental, but it seemed to mostly match what was seen on the screen. It f...

Where Now Are the Dreams of Youth (1932)
Today, I finally had a chance to view this Japanese Silent from 1932. The 'Western' styled story was well done and I was fortunate the music (supplied by me) helped support this film. It was broadcast without any sound? Sad. Usually, all TCM Silents have music. It would seem TCM could have found som...

Caught up with a batch of silents last week, but only time today to deal with one. During yesterday's 'Cinecon', I enjoyed watching The Tin Ghost (1926). I seldom watch Silent Comedy, but the black actor in this had a part equal to any other character in the story. I could not learn his name searching the title on IMDB and elsewhere, but for me, his performance really made the fil...

I'm a William S. Hart fan, but this might be the only 'comedy' film I've seen him in? I thought the gag about collecting the Reward Money (offered for his capture) himself was fun, but it was just the first of much too much comedy for us to enjoy this Western. My friend and I gave up and decided to ...

MAGNIFICENT FILM.... That's encouraging to hear, even if I have no plans of ever seeing this. I saw the 4 1/2 hour long version when it first appeared on TCM. A Mothering Heart (1912) A very pretty Biograph short. The middle-ending section had me on the edge, the acting was just impeccable. Lillian Gish is just my favourite, her reaction to something (i won't spoil, if you haven't seen it) near the end is just gut wrenching. Also my first ever post here,...

The Crisis (1916) is based on a novel by American novelist , Winston Churchill. I'm sure many like myself, assumed Churchill was Sir Winston, and that he had written a book about the American Civil War. Made just after "The Birth of a Nation," it had intended to profit from the other film's fame, b...

I'd be interested to learn how many actually enjoyed watching this film? TCM presented the premiere TV showing with Robert Israel's score many years ago now. The Hands of Orlac (Robert Wiene, 1924) Criterion Channel. Great German Expressionism with huge rooms, huge furniture and doors, plenty of archways, heavy shadows, and extreme eye-popping. The stuttering effect is something most casual fans won't notice. However, once you see it, you can't un-see it, especially when you compare it to a properly encoded blu-ray. Hope I never understand this issue. For my untrained eyes, the picture quality was flawless. My friend and I watched intense...

Still have a few more Lon Chaney movies in my "to watch" pile to check out, so I watched 1919's "Victory" today. I watched this via the Flicker Alley dvd. That appears to be a rip of the Kino dvd/blu release. The Eureka blu-ray is a bit better, check that out if you have the option. The Kino blu also has a weird stuttering effect not present on the Eureka version. Not certain what "weird stuttering" you are referring to? The image quality was so good...

F. W. Murnau's "Nosferatu" in HD with a newer score.
I'm quite certain there's no one in this group that hasn't watched Nosferatu (1922) at least once, and it probably was a much nicer restoration than how I first saw the film in the 1990s. Before anyone had DVDs, before there was even a TCM Channel, I bought a 'Goodtimes' VHS copy at 'Suncoast Video'...

The Bells (1926) directed by James Young and starring Lionel Barrymore, though slow-paced and ponderous at times, contains a vivid dream sequence and an outstanding performance by Barrymore. Chapter 24 of Kevin Brownlow's book, "The Parade's Gone By..." covers both tinting and title making. There's even a still photo of Director John Emerson and wife, Anita Loos examining a set of art titles. The sheets appear to be about 11" X 17" with the titles placed in the middle of the sheet. The Sea Hawk was pure drama and suspense, something Douglas Fairbanks was incapable of.
It's not a silly picture, but a gripping story about what happened in one man's life.
A favorite that I've seen several times over the years.

Yes, thank you for your efforts to make this available in such good quality with excellent, superimposed titles. The written letter translations and music worked well too. Re: Imagine; "Way Down East" with nearly all the silly comedy removed.
While some of the "comic" touches are lame and some of the acting very dated, I would hate to see any editing of Vivia Ogden's superb performance as the comically eccentric but righteously malevolent Martha Perkins. I'm 100 percent with Everson's comments in THE FILMS OF D.W. GRIFFITH concerning bo...
