I also got the Erokiton and Tonka this week from Czechmovies and it had a card in it touting for business. I have bought from Serbia before and still get their e-mails. They offer more modern films and TV shows and the used to tell me that the rest of Europe was lazy not putting English subtitles on...

Re: Anna Karenina with Vivien Leigh - on DVD?

I looked at the holdings at the BFI/NFA Collections and they have copies in various formats like negatives and positives just under 10,000ft in 35mm length so the 139 mins you speak about seems to be that original released length. The 134 and 135mins seen on Amazon.co.uk is PAL TV system speed up of...

Re: Monty Python’s lost comedy roots in BFI film vault

There was a book published that details all the British sketch shows, some in only short series, with the likes of John Cleese, et al, that were wiped in their entirety or one or two saved. Some may have been reel to reel audio recorded but the visuals were a very important part of these shows. Few ...

Re: Where promotional/advertising materials for RKO's films

If I ever find it in my house(I hope it is here), I was given the 1939 RKO release schedule, with a hard cover I think, for Australia. The man who gave it to me to read said his father was in the business at the time. The customers name was Charlie Leathhead, if I remember correctly. Try this: http:...

This is a new Variety Archives site from Variety as a relaunch. It costs money to use so not much interest to me at this time, though.

Re: More on Andy Clyde project - lost films

Interesting but not surprising. Columbia has had some trouble with elements around 1940 that I know of and that seemed to be sound elements for a serial or two and actors have dubbed the missing dialog which I am not keen on as it generally sounds awful. Take the laserdisc of More the Merrier with C...

I represented Eastin-Phelan Corp(Blackhawk Films) for a number of years in the 1970s here in Australia. Little did we know that video would soon displace home film collecting. David was around Blackhawk during this period but I did not meet him at Davenport/Iowa and I was out of the film business as...

Re: What does a burned blu-ray look like?

It is obvious that the left one is a BD-R by the blank area which would not be like that if the same disc was replicated. One issuer of silents, mainly, has done some BD-Rs. I just got two. One was fine and played without a hitch(early US DVD-Rs and some of the first FOX BDs were troublesome and unp...

A tin of worms here. Three films of historical note for several reasons. Reaching for the Moon was also the title of a Douglas Fairbanks, Sr, silent. It came when musicals were deader than a bag of last week's fish. All but the "big" Bing number was excised when released. The track appeared on at le...

Odd that the Murnau archive has no English subtitles on this set. On much other material I have from them there is. It should not be forgotten that Jessie Matthews made the first English version of the Viktor und Viktoria story in 1935 as First a Girl with its own songs. Recently a local radio stati...

Seems like the discs might have been donated to the NFSA. A search brings this up . The NFSA for some years has repatriated non-Australian material so it is strange they still have these there. It does look like these are the ones. A few years back I was in contact with a woman at the Melbourne off...

That print cost $1000 and came from Brentford Labs/London(Rank Film Labs) via USA. It was, in fact, copied from the BBC's own print. The purchaser, now deceased a few years at 96, on sold it to the local Bing Crosby Club. It was 16mm. The original screening on two nights was at Camberwell Civic Cent...
