Re: Nearly complete Ozu film from prewar silent era discover
Many Japanese films were shown in Japanese theaters in Hawaii over the decades and there is a book on these places with film posters. I assume there were a lot of Japanese in Hawaii at the time). Ignoring the climatic conditions in Hawaii, I wonder what happened to the prints as they finished their ...

Not so if it had been videotape as many a flooded TV station basement in USA have found to their horror.

Zarah Leander was a Swedish actress who had played in the Merry Widow on the Swedish stage and made some recordings from the show. She was at one time married to Swedish dance band leader Arne Hulphers. She made a number of German films and was said to be a favorite of Hitler. One of her wartime fil...

Steve there have been other reports in the past. I can name a dozen people I have read obits for and at least one is still alive all these years later(Gloria De Haven, once married to actor John Payne) and that was in a reference book by a respected UK film reviewer who should have known better!!!!

I met and knew Marty when he worked for Thunderbird Films in LA during the 1970s. He sold me a reel of 16mm color takes from the aborted Judy Garland Annie Get Your Gun. He had it on an 800 foot reel in the rear of his old Pinto in the blazing summer sun in LA!!! His friend Murray Glass(both animati...

And Grapevine Video put out a copy on DVD in the last couple of years. I believe that the NFSA Blu Ray is BD-R, not replicated. I knew the man who said he found the film dumped in Sydney, I met him at the Australian Film Institute in the 1970s and he worked for the SAFC who I sold material to then a...

That Vitaphone audioless list sort of matches the number German features that are said to be completely lost and no mention of what shorts they no longer had. Different reasons, though, then Vitaphone. Somewhere in the middle of USA some many years ago(1970s) was a huge warehouse with 78s and it wen...

No 257 Frasquita(1934) Carl Lamac film made in Austria. This stars Czech opera singer Jarmilla Novotna and comedian Heinz Ruhmann who had a rather long life and made many films to the end. Outside of Bitter Sweet(UK 1933) the other handful films he is said to be in have not surfaced on DVD, not that this has either although I had the film on 16mm. Bowlly is listed as Singer and I believe early in the film you see his hands on his guitar in the Lew Stone Orchestra as the camera does a ...

I enjoyed that track. Tragically, I had and also sold to customers all the Japanese resissue LPs of Canaro but lost them or they disappeared after I had a serious fire in my storage area in May 1997. I did sell a lot to my customers at the time who bought up the series as I got them. The Carmen Mira...

Re: Power of early film: crime, sexuality and censorship
Australia did have a state by state Censorship board until modern times. When I imported film(16mm & 8mm gauges) into Australia they had to go the censorship office from the Post Office or airport and I had to be at the import location port before they sent it off and then wait for a card to say the...

I used to own a Super8mm sound print-down of a one-reel Lee DeForest Phonofilm that featured the Broadway cast of "Show Boat". I can't find any reference to it online, but I did own a copy of it at one time. The film consisted of some silent shots of two or three men sitting in the audience of the ...

Don't know how many, if any, survive. There was a srory circulating around years ago that the RKO (successor to F.B.O.) vault guy supplemented his income by sending the F.B.O. films to silver reclamation. Yes, I heard this story too in a similar fashion. I read that Joe Franklin(not always a reliabl...

Hitler is said to have loved Fred & Ginger. At least Fred had an Austrian background as far as i know. The story goes the Nazis knocked off 35mm prints of their films from the Dutch film exchanges when they invaded the Holland. Who knows?

I have and may still have a few on 16mm film. There was a Laserdisc planned but nothing seems to have happened. Talk about government cuts to the ABCTV is all real but then looking back they had economic wows, bad really, and wiped scores of tapes and got rid of may reels of film in the 1970s. Got no idea where the NFSA archives were that they did not grab them but them they can be funny too. ABC like the BBC...

I saw this in its first run at the old Barclay(former King's Theatre) in the CBD of Melbourne/Australia. We went with school and sat in the so-called lounge area and I was in the front roe of that.
