The gentleman responsible for these YouTube posts is Roger Robles, who is a well known 78 RPM collector and audio restoration geek. There are quite a few CDs available with audio work done by Roger...notably 2 CDs of early to mid 1930s Ozzie Nelson and His Orchestra, and a brilliant 2 CD set, "Gus A...

You know, for years I used some of the same defense on Rohauer, but the reality is that Buster Keaton's silent work would have been rediscovered with or without Rohauer, and if someone like Paul Killiam had done it instead, perhaps Keaton would have gotten a better financial shake from those reissu...

It's not even a trickle. With what we've been hearing about how the classic DVDs lose money or if they're lucky, break even, I can't see any way that WB would go back to the way it was. The Archive has been extremely successful, with very litte overhead. I'm thinking that we'd better get comfortabl...

That's correct. There's no chance of "ripping" the DVD if it won't mount on my computer... and it won't (for the record, I have an iMac, and the discs will neither mount on my internal DVD drive or my external Sony). As for the reliability of DVD-Rs, you might want to browse through this discussion...

This is really the only way it is cost efficient for Warners to release these titles. The regular pressed classic DVD from Warner's is close to dead. It's the Archive or nothing. I just got my 50th WA DVD, and have not had one fail. They are all played on my Sony Blu-ray player. I don't think the p...

Steve, my experience with DVD-Rs mirrors yours. I have thousands of burned discs going back to early 2002, and I have not had any problems with any of them not reading once successfully burned.

About 29 minutes in, there's a little mistake fascinating only for film geeks. Pasted to a sidewalk kiosk in the set (OK, it's a pissoir) is an original poster for the first exhibition of the Lumiere Cinematographe. But that didn't occur until December, 1895; Clair's film is set in July of that yea...

Laser was the closest we've ever come to having a film buff's category of retail; sure, every laser store sold lots of new releases back when widescreen was a novelty, but the guy at the laserdisc store was bound to have at least passing awareness of the kind of things Criterion was up to, and to a...

Re: Ken Crane

DeepDiscount is owned by Infinity and they warehouse and ship from their address for other companies which is not uncommon now. In fact the record companies here envisaged such a warehouse and EMI & Sony, I think, did give it a go but they were ordered and invoiced separately but shipped from the s...

Yes, and Ken Crane's became DVD Planet, which is now owned by the same company that owns Deep Discount DVD, so in a way you are doing business with the same company when you buy from DDD.

I'd say that Three's a Crowd is a near-masterwork. It's certainly not a very happy or optimistic one, but I wasn't expecting it to be--and it's a fundamental mistake to expect an outright comedy like Langdon's earlier and later efforts. Rather, it's a study of a very lonely and alienated soul whose...

I agree with what Bob said--I also find THE CHASER moves pretty well and has a lot of laughs. THREE'S A CROWD suffers from a weak supporting cast (Langdon's character, due to its surreal nature, always worked best when he had other strong performers to play against who formed a contrast) but also L...

We could get hepper to Milton Sills. Oh yeah, that reminded me, "Valley Of The Giants" would definitely be on my list. Like you say, the Cinephiles would be down with it as it has played several of the cons to much acclaim, but I don't recall it being part of anybody's silent "canon" outside of that.
