I was blown away even by the bad print of WHITE GOLD in Syracuse last year. I also remember THE STONE RIDER. NORTH OF 36 was a favorite of mine from Columbus. SMOULDERING FIRES was another film I think deserves to be better known. I would say that the silent that I knew nothing about that totally b...

Wow, you have 300 Blu-Rays already?? Must be a lot of contemporary films in there. We may have to rescind your Nitrateville membership card (if there was such a thing). Well, there are a fair amount of films from the past decade (including a number of off-beat titles that never seem to show up at o...

While most of my DVD-Rs off of TCM are more or less randomly arranged in stacks of mainly silent and mainly sound titles, I do have some order for all my commercially-purchased discs (about a hundred laserdiscs, about a thousand DVDs, and about 300 BluRays). My 16mm and 35mm film prints used to be ...

I like the answer John Cusack (as Rob Gordon) gives in "High Fidelity" when he is asked how he is filing his records. "Autobiographically", he says, "I have to remember that this record goes in the October 1983 pile, because I bought it to give to an ex-girlfriend, but never gave it to her, because ...

Re: More Film Noirs!
I just got the advance notice for a two-volume set of Bad Girls of Film Noir, apparently from Columbia. Great news! Unfortunately, the advance notice doesn't list any of the films, and doesn't mention if they are captioned. Anybody know? Jim Yes, the films are captioned. They showed "Two Of A Kind"...

Speaking of Blu-Ray, I'm thinking of ditching a fair amount of my cable service (whatever the minimum is that allows me to see TCM and Top Chef) and one alternative that's been suggested is to get a Blu-Ray player that can, apparently, stream movies in HD from NetFlix? Is this true? It seems as imp...

My Panasonic DVD recorder died recently at age 5. Won't even power up now. There have been many others who have had problems with these as well. I have a friend who owns a service shop that is a Panasonic authorized repair facility. He tells me that Panny DVD recorders have proven to be extremely r...

My urgency about this is greatly lessened by the fact that I've watched two Panasonic DVD recorders die inexplicable early deaths. I'm coming to the conclusion that just buying the damn discs from Warner Archive is probably cost-effective compared to spending $300 a year on a new recorder. I'm sure...

Re: William Perry's Score for THE GENERAL
I have always loved William Perry's score for this Keaton film. I have an old video of THE GENERAL that has his music, but it seems to be nowhere on DVD. As nice as the recent DVD's have been on this title, with great picture quality and very nice scores, I miss Perry's music. The most recent DVD h...

Yes we have the opera and a film festival in December which I've never been to.... We also had the film study center funded by Greer Garson at College of Santa Fe, but they went bankrupt this year.... OK, I found it now. I would be extremely wary of this DVD. With no producer listed and no reviews...it most likely is someone's homemade DVD-R copy of the Critic's Choice video. I think the last is what really distinguishes what's a B and what's a quick/cheap programmer - where it played and if it started out on the bottom half of a double bill. If nothing else, looking at the distribution history allows us to see what the *studios* thought of these film. Were double bills...

Re: Great B Movies
All of that aside, one clear-cut B that really shines in my opinion is The End of the Trail (1932), a Columbia western starring Tim McCoy and Wheeler Oakman, a surprisingly sensitive drama of Indians and cavalrymen. It's the best B western I've ever seen, and it has more meat on its bones than a lo...
