Author Orlean Seeks Oscar for Rin Tin Tin
Susan Orlean wants AMPAS to award the First Best Actor Oscar to Rin-Tin-Tin, or have a montage saluting dogs in films this year:

Setting a new standard in shameless self-promotion. Or perhaps she never considered that such recognition might sell more copies of her (rather disappointing) book on Rin-Tin-Tin.

If only we could actually SEE Rinty's surviving silents. As far as I know, only one (CLASH OF THE WOLVES) is legitimately available.
Re: Author Orlean Seeks Oscar for Rin Tin Tin
she talks about the dog star and the book. I got to admit I needed a box of tissues and/or hanky.

Re: Author Orlean Seeks Oscar for Rin Tin Tin
Self-promotion, very likely, but that it sets any new standard in that much-practiced art is highly questionable. Any book drawing attention to Rinty, & other canine performers, is a good one. Would anyone assert that Rinty is less deserving of an Oscar than, say, Halle Berry? He won't get it, of course, more's the pity, but that montage would make an acceptable consolation prize.DShepFilm wrote:Setting a new standard in shameless self-promotion. I too found the book terribly disappointing, if only for numerous factual errors that should have been caught in a book that took a decade to write.

The book was terribly disappointing, but as a dog lover and film enthusiast, I would welcome a montage of the contributions of dogs (and cats if absolutely necessary) to the history of our beloved medium. And to think Warners kicked poor Rinty out after sound because they thought animal pictures were dead. All he did was save the f****** studio. Sorru about the profanity, but the way that poor dog was treated gets my back up.

The untold story is that on the way out Rin Tin Tin bit Jack Warner on the ass.
Something many a WB contract actor could only envy.

Rinty's contributions to the movies
cannot be overestimated and a
special Oscar would not be out of the question
(The Rin Tin Tin name still brings
expressions of familiarity to queried
faces). Its just a long line of more deserving
people are ahead. Cary Grant and Peter Sellers
come to mind.
It is rare that a posthumous award is given.
The Academy seems to want its special award
recipients to clutch their awards and their hearts.

Cats? Ah, yes, just as the ruffian, or the redskin, or the wolf pack, closes in for the kill, Tabby saunters in to save the imperiled children. Let's not go off the deep end.Bob Furem wrote: I would welcome a montage of the contributions of dogs (and cats if absolutely necessary)...

As a parrot owner, can I put my vote in for the much-needed Great Moments in Bird Kissing montage?

Hey, whaddya mean, "cats if necessary?" Hrmmpphh! I take comfort in the fact that cats own the interwebs. I see your Rinty, and raise you Henri, the Existentialist Cat.Bob Furem wrote:The book was terribly disappointing, but as a dog lover and film enthusiast, I would welcome a montage of the contributions of dogs (and cats if absolutely necessary) to the history of our beloved medium.

There are people here with the skills to put that together. But ew.s.w.a.c. wrote:As a parrot owner, can I put my vote in for the much-needed Great Moments in Bird Kissing montage?
