New From Grapevine: Marion Davies, Bessie Love, Mary Astor

Post by bobfells » Fri Mar 22, 2013 11:58 am

Grapevine Video has announced its March releases. Top of the list is 1919's GETTING MARY MARRIED with Marion Davies, Norman Kerry, and Matt Moore, directed by Allan Dwan:

Grapevine notes that this film was provided by the generosity of collector Edward Lorusso

Also, the 1918 and 1935 versions of THE PASSING OF THE THIRD FLOOR BACK. The 1918 version was directed by Herbert Brenon; the 1935 talkie version stars Conrad Veidt. Each film is on a separate disc.

Also, 1927's RUBBER TIRES starring Bessie Love and Harrison Ford, directed by Alan Hale.

And an upgrade of THE FIGHTING COWARD (1924) starring Ernest Torrence, Mary Astor, Cullen Landis, Noah Beery, and Phyllis Haver. Directed by James Cruze, the story by Booth Tarkington was later remade as MISSISSIPPI (1935) with W.C. Fields, Joan Bennett, and Bing Crosby in the Torrence/Astor/Landis roles respectively. This new edition is a digital transfer from an amber-tinted print. If you purchased this film previously from Grapevine (I did), they will send you a free upgrade.

Just ordered GETTING MARY MARRIED. I'm in a Marion Davies collecting mood, having already picked up all of her Warner Archive silents. I quite like the pretty and talented Miss Davies.

Waverboy:

Any chance we'll see Marion's excellent 1927 THE FAIR CO-ED come to Warners? It's one of Sam Woods better silents after years honing his skill with similar Gloria Swanson themed fare.

Mary and Bessie, at one time sisters-in-laws married to brothers of Howard Hawks. I'd like to see Bessie's turn with Rick Barthelmess in First National's 1925 SOUL-FIRE, an island romance picture.

Ed,

:? Remember they showed a newly restored print of THE FAIR CO-ED in 35 millimeter in Chicago in 2009 I believe? But I'd like to see ZANDER THE GREAT and BEVERLY OF GRAUSTARK, and especially THE CARDBOARD LOVER released through Warner Archive, or TCM Vault just as much. TILLIE THE TOILER too. And Turner's supposedly had a pristine print of LITTLE OLD NEW YORK. Which is probably now held for Warner's by the Library of Congress.

I'll be ordering GETTING MARY MARRIED, probably the Upgrade of THE FIGHTING COWARD although I think it's still from a Kodascope. And I held off on getting CODE OF THE SEA from last month. Never saw any comments about it. However, Rich told me in an E-mail that t's a tinted print, and very nice quality transfer.

Jeff--let me know if the score is endurable...the "half" of any silent that many seem to think unimportant.

The print of LONY shown at the Library in the 1990s was absolutely impeccable, a wonderfully preserved silent that the Library has had for decades. The source material of the film beats out Sidney Olcott's lousy static direction(which got lousier in MONSIEUR BEAUCAIRE, the next year). Some Nitratevillians here probably could've done a better job with the film. My favorite parts in LONY are Fulton's steamboat trials and Louis Wolheim about to savage poor Marion(masquerading as a boy) before discovering she's a female.

Jeff.... I bought Code of the Sea but of course haven't gotten to it yet.....

The Fair Co-Ed would be a real treat for Davies fans. Not sure why Warners would have rights to Little Old New York since it was made before Davies joined MGM, but I've long given up on trying to wade through the copyrights quagmire.

Ah, if only I had such connections...alas, all I do is purchase their titles, and have no inside knowledge as to their release schedule. However, should they release it, I shall be ordering it immediately.

Ed,

:o Because LITTLE OLD NEW YORK is a Goldwyn Silent before the formation of MGM. TCM has scored a few early Goldwyn Silents in the past. Such as SOULS FOR SALE , and WILD ORANGES.

The is a brownish tinge to CODE OF THE SEA but that may be an age factor rather than a tint factor. The upgrade for FIGHTING COWARD, and RUBBER TIRES (and GETTING MARY MARRIED) are on their way from Grapevine. I'll let you know.

Bob,

:? I ordered GETTING MARY MARRIED, and the upgrade of THE FIGHTING COWARD. I would have ordered CODE OF THE SEA if it were still on sale. Will get it and probably THAT GIRL MONTANA some other time. I should have ordered over the weekend and the package would likely have been here by tomorrow or Friday.

By the way, did I mention that Rich plans to release some new titles later this year? Lon Chaney Birthday tribute on TCM Monday Morning. Including THE BLACKBIRD for the first time since October of 2008.

Gagman,

You can always get yourself a discount on Grapevine movies that are not otherwise on sale. When you select something in the cart, there appears a personal code box. Type in PNAS and you will receive a $2 discount on each and every non-sale dvd you order.
