Mill Creek Entertainment has recently released a DVD set called "Hollywood: Streets of Gold." It consists of five vintage (1960s-1980s) documentaries. One of the documentaries, "Hollywood: The Golden Years," deals with the silent years and the introduction of sound. This documentary aired originally in 1960, and its narrator is Gene Kelly. While not free from inaccuracies, it does present a nice and brief overview of Hollywood in the silent film era. There were several clips in it that I had never seen before - notably a few clips from "Don Juan's Three Nights" (I compared the clips to a few stills I have from the film to make sure that I wasn't hallucinating. Since the film is lost, I'm assuming that the clips came from stock footage or a trailer). I found this DVD set at my local Walmart in the five dollar bin, and I believe that this documentary alone justified the purchase.
