This will be an ideal chance for people to preview these films. I've got the DVD and strongly recommend it. The films are all fun and there is quite a variety, including a rare 1921 sound short film that's an obvious forerunner to the Cinerama films featuring views from moving trains, a lovely little 1929 two-color Technicolor short, and of course John Ford's long-lost comedy feature UPSTREAM (not to mention the surviving three reels of the "Hitchcock" feature THE WHITE SHADOW). The DVD also includes an extensive booklet of background information. (Now if only it were on Blu-ray!)

Some people are never satisfied, are they? :D

(I haven't got a blue ray, a red ray or even a purple one!)

I wish we had a decent version of TCM here in Oz as we will miss out on seeing this! (Does my face look green to you?)

I've given up waiting for something interesting and new on TCM Australia. You should be able to get it with shipping from Amazon for just under $30. The price of two movie tickets.

You betcha! Working for over 20 years in a movie theatre spoiled me for 35mm quality. Blu-ray is as close as it gets for cheap and convenient home use.

You don't even have a DVD player?! That's a red ray.

Too bad about your TCM. I find that I rarely watch it these days, as I've only got the standard-definition version, though I occasionally record something to DVD-R and may catch up with something I really want to see through the online "Watch TCM" version, as a last resort.

Thank you for enlightening me - I didn't know this. I thought I was having a bit of a joke.

I actually worked for a time in the cinema business myself - not only with 35mm - but with 70mm and 6 track sound. Yes, the picture was clear - but you have to put it into perspective. How many homes have a screen that is 4 metres high and 30 metres long?

Before I moved from my last house, I had built a cinema and had a large screen - in proportion to the size of the room and I screened DVD's by projector. The picture quality (to my eyes anyway) was quite adequate. (I am told that the DVD's were upscaled to 1080p - for those that like technical type talk).

I have been into a store and seen a Blue Ray disc playing - but quite honestly I could not see the point of further upgrading so that I might be able to see every pimple on a face. I was quite happy with what I had.

I think it's all in the argument of quality in lieu of quantity. You see, I still have all my 78's - all my long playing gramophone records - all my cassette and reel to reel tapes - all my CD's - all my 8mm and Super 8mm films and now about 3,000 DVD's. If I started up a collection of Blue Ray Discs I would have to buy a library to store everything in! :D

Horses for courses.

The problem with TCM here is that it is broadcast by satellite into half a dozen countries and so has a myriad of rights issues to sort out for every picture screened. Which is probably why they rotate the same old pictures over and over.

:) I mentioned these premieres here several months ago. It is the first time since 2003 or 2004 that a Treasures series has been shown on TCM. The First Two Treasures From The American Film Archive collections debuted in Prime-time.

I'm particularly interested to see "Part 2" which has the only surviving episode of the Edison 12 part serial from 1914, starring Mary Fuller, "The Active Life of Dolly of the Dailies," centered on the exploits of Dolly Desmond (Fuller), an investigative reporter for a daily newspaper. The surviving film is "Episode No. 5, The Chinese Fan."

For a brief time in the mid 1910s, Mary Fuller was as popular as Mary Pickford. http://11east14thstreet.com/2013/03/01/ ... -part-two/" target="_blank" target="_blank

I've started dipping into the DVD of this and there is some really good stuff. However a tad disappointed that there's only one 3 hour disc in the set. Are TCM just showing the same films as the DVD or are they premiering other material?

Just a reminder---if you have a public library nearby, request them to buy this DVD...my local library did and I thoroughly
enjoyed it. The "Runaway Train" short is quite good, although dizzying....Love this rare material.

Somehow I totally missed out on these TCM broadcasts last month--will UPSTREAM be shown again before too long on TCM?

westegg,

:? I definitely wouldn't count on it. When TCM aired the first two volumes of TREASURES FROM THE AMERICAN FILM ARCHIVE about a decade ago none of the movies were ever shown again from either set. Except for some Trailers seen in other presentations. Such as The Fragments special. They never re-aired SNOW WHITE (1916), HELL'S HINGES (1916), GRETCHEN THE GRENHORN (1917), TOLL OF THE SEA (1922), Not even the Warner Brother's titles CLASH OF THE WOVLES with Rin Tin -Tin and Lubitsch LADY WINDERMERE'S FAN. If you want to see UPSTREAM and THE WHITE SHADOW, I suggest that you buy the DVD set!

I have to imagine the National Film Preservation Foundation grants a broadcasting license as a one-time-only thing to drive DVD sales of their new sets.

Thanks. As it happens, WHITE SHADOW was available for viewing about a year ago on the NFP site, and I'm glad I caught it.
