Film is finally in but I can't run the movie files on my old PC. But here's a snap of Marion applying lip rouge while mama scolds her for being a flapper.

Ed,

Thanks again for doing this. Out of curiosity, exactly what did you "get"? Was it stand-alone hard drive? Any other goodies in the package?

From what I can see, the print quality is EXCELLENT.... I got an external hard drive with movie files in PRO RES, which is a MAC program. When I try to run the files, way too big (28.7 million KB for one) for my desktop, the film runs at about 1/10 the normal speed so I can see basically a slow slide show....

I'll schlep the drive to Bucksport tomorrow and drop it off with the experts along with Donald Sosin's score. I should get it back next week on DVD.

Ed,

:) Wow! That looks awesome! I told you that it probably wouldn't be compatible with your equipment and software. It definitely wouldn't be with mine. Hopefully, that lab can produce something that works like a charm! Can you put this up on Bob Fells Silent Films Today Facebook group ?

Dropped materials at Northeast Historic Film Archive. The film is in 4 files and runs about 77 minutes. The music score runs 90, so they'll have to lower the fps rate to get the film back to its original run time. Because they copied reels, there's a lot of extraneous junks like the countdown thing at the beginning and "end of reel" info at the end. Should be doable because I've edited this kind of stuff out of silents even on my antique computers. Once they have a complete single file in DVD format they can add the music track and that should be it. Famous last words.......

Nice to see you haven't lost your sense of humor Ed.

I took a look at "Enchantment" via IMDB and learned when it was released, it actually was rated higher than "Tol'able David" as the best picture of the month back then.

The quality looks astonishingly good, so much better than some of the stuff we've shared with each other in the past. It's also good that the film speed will likely be better when slowed down to match the score.

Good luck getting everything to fit the way you want...and I mean that sincerely.

A sequence was shown some years ago in 35mm at Syracuse- Davies comes down a stairway in a party dress. It was exquisitely beautiful. Some people who'd seen the whole thing said it wasn't a great film, but it was lovely on a visual level & Davies was charming.

DONE DONE DONE..... Now the process of copying and mailing.... I should have all copies mailed out by 25 April.....

I think it looks great, and music score by Donald Sosin is terrific.

Ed,

:D Wow! Just viewed this and loved it! Brilliantly acted, staged, and directed. Who is the leading man Jon Bowers? There is no cast list. He was terrific! The Mother and the father were also great. The film is fabulous all around. Beautiful sets and atmosphere. Very little missing footage. Minimal print damage. One of the most perfect transfers in terms of speed I have seen. So many Silents are either encoded way to slow, or much to fast. This is about as precise as I can recall. An absolute treasure unearthed here. Never expected it to be anywhere near this good! Donald Sousin's score is solid in most parts and extremely good during a few scenes. ENCHANTMENT was indeed the ideal title for this picture. I was charmed from Start to finish! Now what can we come up with for an encore?

I agree and have just written a glowing review for the IMDB. As for the next project, Gagman, I think that Ed and Ben have done a tremendous job with their Kickstarter projects, but I'll be glad to consider donating some money when it's your turn in the barrel.

:) How about the Constance Talmadge feature LESSONS IN LOVE? I don't think that they have EAST IS WEST as that was restored by Eye in Amsterdam. What is the copyright status on BUTTERFLY or THE MIDNIGHT SUN? I'm still very curious about REVENGE. Does THE GATEWAY OF THE MOON exist? Is it under copyright?

I hadn't even noticed there was no cast list. The leading man is Forrest Stanley.

Ed,

:o OK I thought that I had seen him before someplace, but the name doesn't ting any immediate bells? What about the Mom and Dad. Who the heck were they?

Lessons in Love is Rohauer material and there are donor restrictions, as there are with all the Rohauer/Talmadge titles. What is at LoC on that title is a preservation from a nitrate 35mm that was in tinting order with flash titles. There is an unscrambled version with extended titles, a project done in 2007, but it is only on betaSP and only available from the Cohen collection; that's what we showed this past Tuesday (with a license fee to Cohen) at the Cinema Arts Centre.

Just curious, will you be selling the "Enchanted" DVD online (Amazon, Grapevine) or were DVDs of the film just for Kickstarter backers?

Ben

This was quite a surprise to me, as I thought Ed had previously noted that, owing to cost considerations, it would have to be mute. What a delight, therefore, to hear something FAR superior to the score of Getting Mary Married. Immensely impressed with Ed's production. Wasn't expecting, either, such slick packaging--Rodney's cover design is very handsome.

If wish-lists are being constructed, are any of Bebe Daniels' Paramount pictures available to be rescued? (Other than those available from Grapevine.)
