I see this set is almost 17 hours. I take it that the 3 discs are double sided. Out of curiosity, off hand, how much of the material is overlapped from previous DVD releases? I have a lot of releases for specific comedians, as well as a couple of compilation type sets already.

The discs are all single sided.

I have finally been able to really dig into this Mack Sennett-set in the last few days, and am enjoying it as much as anticipated.
As the previous poster said, the discs are one-sided.
As for whether the films "overlap" with earlier home video-releases, there's really no comparison, most of the time. Sure, I already got THE SPEED KINGS (1913), but only on some low-budget release, far from a crisp print like the one provided here, with a decent piano score; and one could go on and on. And in any case, I'd think that there are plenty of films here which many or most of us have never seen before; I know there are in my case.

Thanks. I agree about there being no comparison as far as low quality releases. I wonder how many volumes they will make with so much material per volume.

EDIT: I thought about it for a while and realized that I must be crazy to even hesitate on this purchase. There are DVD releases that I have no problem spending $20 on for 2-3 hours of material of this similar nature and this one is about $40 for over 17 hours. I went ahead and made the purchase.

TCM showed a tribute to Sennett that had about double these films, which I burned to several DVRs. If you compare my recordings with the new blu-ray set, which I did as soon as I received it, it is almost as if they chose every other one to put on volume 1. I am guessing the rest will form volume 2.

Yes! Exactly! I have bought more things than I probably should thinking how cheap it is compared to what I used to pay $70 for on laserdisc, and I'm sure many others could say the same about 16mm or 8mm. Nevertheless, it's true. These guys are all putting out such amazing things, that we would have killed to have 20 or 30 years ago, for the cost of a pizza or two, basically. To those three or four companies who really bring us those rarities and wonders, the least I can do to show gratitude is to buy almost without hesitation.

Now where's my Thunderbean blu-ray? I ordered it yesterday...

I agree with that. Silent comedy is a delicate thing. Technical things that seem small and minor to dramas make a huge impact on comedy... for instance the timing of the sound!

I've purchased the Sennett set and am really enjoying these films, thanks to Flicker Alley.
But I need a little help.
I cannot turn on the commentaries. No matter how I navigate in disc menu, the commentary links are never an option. Can anyone help; I'm missing out! Thanks!

I think you have to press the "audio" key on your Blu Ray remote and select the 2nd audio track to get the commentaries.

as a collector for over fifty year...gasp... it seems so strange that people now quibble about a dark ring here or there/\...what is available now ws absolutely inconceivable thirty or forty years agao...also when one looks at the price of ten to 15 dollars per pone real comedy on 8mm today's prices are a revelation.....be thankful for what is there and what you can have...some never had that kind of choice......
