Buster Keaton Short Films Collection 1917-1923 Blu Ray

Unread post by jacksparrow900 » Wed Mar 09, 2016 2:38 pm

Kino Lorber will release on Blu-ray Buster Keaton: The Shorts Collection 1917-1923. The five-disc Blu-ray set will be available for purchase on May 24.

The films in the collection were newly restored by Lobster Films in France, which last year initiated a kickstarer campaign to save 19 Buster Keaton solo comedies as well 13 short films the iconic actor made with Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle and Al St. John. The project was overseen by Serge Bromberg, who was also involved with the restoration of Georges Melies' legendary film "Le voyage dans la lune" a.k.a A Trip to the Moon (1902).

I am torn (as I think many folks will be).
I already have Kino's first Keaton shorts Blu-ray.
I already have Kino's Arbuckle/Keaton films on DVD.
I guess these restorations are supposed to be higher quality.
Do I care? I'm not sure.

I've got a pre-order in, just in case. I'll be carefully monitoring pre-release reviews to see about the image quality, etc. Lobster's been pretty reliable, though.

And somebody just posted a one-star review of the set on Amazon...

Can we not let our obsessive silent-movie-nut squabbles (I say this as one myself) destroy the chances of these films getting to the public in the best quality?? -- JUST ONCE?!

I left a comment explaining why the one star review was inaccurate and asked the reviewer to kindly remove his review. It's gone now. What a stand up guy--I was expecting him to rebuttal with something witty like, "Nuh Uh!"

Did the person have a pre-release review copy? Amazon is full of "reviews" for things the writers couldn't possibly have seen.

I read the review while it was posted. The writer had not seen the set. He was mad that he has to buy another set of Keaton shorts on BluRay. This was really stupid, because they have all been remastered for BluRay, and there is a new version of THE BLACKSMITH, plus the Arbuckle /Keaton shorts. The writer complained that he had bought the Keaton DVDs individually, and then then Kino came out with the box set with the Keaton extras. (I'm pretty sure that the Extra DVD was eventually offered separately.) He said that Kino "does that all the time", so he really had a vendetta against them.

That's the beauty of it. Oftentimes people do not realise that criticism is a two way street, open to repercussions, positive or negative.
I have the Buster Keaton Box set, am happy with it, and I do have tons of silent films released in so many incarnations I could not keep up with. I shrugged my shoulders and say to myself "that's good", and if someone does not have them ,or if someone else decides to "upgrade" if the need/want is there why not?"
Silent films are a very fragile art of moviemaking, and in my opinion the more are exposed and released to a willing audience, I always say...keep them coming!
Oh...I do so want to upgrade Spione on Blu-Ray, I just love that movie so much!

Those who are not happy of the double-dip can sell their old copies, like I did. Restorations are not done to annoy us; they are done to SAVE FILMS. The old Blu-ray short film set has pretty beat up picture for some of the films, so a new restoration is welcomed. Lobster crowd-funded this project and raised 50K euros, which was money well spent for restoring so many films. If the new Blu-rays show great improvement, it will be money well spent for us too. Btw, the new Blu-ray set is $39.89 at Barnes & Nobles.

I donated to the fundraiser to restore these films. I understand that I'll be receiving the blu-rays when/after they are released to everyone.
I'm glad that I donated and I look forward to seeing them (despite owning previous releases).

If nothing else, it is worth it to see the other version of The Blacksmith-- which is likely the actual release version; what we've known all these years is probably an alternate pre-release cut, which was improved upon.

Is Hard Luck complete in this set?

One other consideration that I haven't seen mentioned yet... Paul Gierucky is preparing a collection of Arbuckle, presumably for blu-ray release. Do you suppose that set might include the shorts that have been added to this new Keaton set? If that's the case, not only would we be double dipping on the Keaton solo shorts, we would have to double dip on the Keaton/Arbuckle ones.

With all this remastering and re-releasing public domain material that has already been released on blu-ray, I get the feeling that the home video distribution folks who specialize in rights free films are desperately trying to get their stuff released before the whole physical media ship sinks. Unfortunately, encouraging their customers to double and triple dip only makes the ship sink faster.

The complete "Hard Luck" was already made available many years ago on the "Keaton Plus" DVD, so I would have to assume the new Blu-ray will have the complete version too.

I have that DVD, but then when Kino released their last Keaton shorts collection on BD, they had lost the rights to that complete version of Hard Luck and had to revert back to the truncated version, as I recall.

On the KEATON PLUS DVD they had a version of HARD LUCK which incorporated some shrunken 28mm footage of the last scene. The legendary Keaton dive looked like a Del Lord animation gag. My question is: does this new Keaton blu-ray use this same footage, or is it completely new material? Lobster has a wonderful habit of locating previously unknown European prints of American silent comedies, I hope this is the case.

Eureka in the UK announced a similar set today. July release date I believe.

Thanks for the link
Hard to say if this is the same though. Only 4 discs instead of 5. Will have to wait for more info I suppose!

The DVD Beaver review is out:

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film5/blu-ray_ ... lu-ray.htm

I'll buy it because it includes the Arbuckles, plus they all have ensemble scores; I know some people love organ scores, but for me the new music is reason enough to buy new blu-rays of the Keaton shorts.

I don't think this is going to be a release you can judge by screen shots. The problem with the first blu-ray is the really rough sections. We'll have to see how those are handled in the new release.

Not to encourage or discourage but simply to note: Amazon shows the US set at $42.99 so the difference between the two sets is pretty small.

It was $60 when I added it to my Amazon wish list. I would never expect to buy 12 hours of HD scans of archival elements with good scores by excellent musicians for less than $42. The Flicker Alley Chaplins were about 40 bucks for pre-release orders.

The Masters of Cinema release is also on 4 Discs instead of 5.

Interesting that DVD Beaver is showing comparisons between the UK Masters of Cinema set,
the Arte set and KINO's new release on Blu-ray but it does not include any comparisons from
the previous KINO release:

I've notice subtle political skews like that before at Beaver. I think he wants to keep his flow of screeners coming.
