New Grapevine: PATHS TO PARADISE - Ray Griffith

Unread post by bobfells » Thu Jun 23, 2016 12:28 pm

If Paramount won't release its silents on home video, let us be thankful that Grapevine Video is. Just announced are:

PATHS TO PARADISE (1925) starring Raymond Griffith

and WE'RE IN THE NAVY NOW (1926) another Wallace Beery-Raymond Hatton service comedy.

These are likely from 16mm Kodascope editions but recently Jack and Jason Hardy have done fine work squeezing out the best Image quality. Here's the link to all new releases: http://www.grapevinevideo.com/new_releases.html" target="_blank

I doubt the source for Grapevine's PATHS TO PARADISE is a Kodascope because the copy I bought from Grapevine was missing the last reel.

All copies are. The last reel is lost.

I find it interesting that Kodascope would have released PATHS TO PARADISE like that.

They didn't; the title was never available on Kodascope. It derives from a 35mm source, missing the last reel.

Yes, Paths to Paradise does star Betty Compson AND Raymond Griffith. I think that they make a great team. It's a shame that they were never paired on-screen again.

It does survive in 35mm, except the last reel. Somewhere I have an old Grapevine videotape of Paths to Paradise from the 1990s, so this isn't the first time that they have released this title.

Paths to Paradise was also briefly available in DVD from ReelClassicDVD. I'm glad I got the disc when I did, often their image quality is better than Grapevine's.

I received my copies of PATHS TO PARADISE and WE'RE IN THE NAVY NOW and I am pleasantly surprised with the image quality of both. Both films have organ scores by David Knutson that are very nicely done. Here are screen caps from PATHS:

Any word on how the Grapevine version of Paths to Paradise compares to the Televista DVD released back in 2009?

That's encouraging. The DVD page (http://www.grapevinevideo.com/paths-to-paradise.html) has a link to the Blu-Ray, but it takes you to Casey at Bat.

Edit: the search function brings up the correct Blu-Ray link: http://www.grapevinevideo.com/paths-to- ... luray.html. I have the old DVD but I guess I will need to double-dip.

I'm curious to know if this was mastered in HD; if not, it wouldn't make much difference whether on DVD-R or BD-R...?

That was in the back of my mind as well. The DVD's cheaper, but a genuine increase in visual quality would be worth added cost.

Waverboy, you did you receive a PM I recently sent you on a different topic? My apologies for going off-topic.
