For the month of October -- when Diana Serra Cary will celebrate her 98th birthday -- I've lowered the price of the DVD of The Family Secret by 5 bucks! If you haven't picked up a copy, here's your chance to snag one at $14.98. The DVD includes new transfers of two of Baby Peggy's rare Century comedy shorts, scanned from 35mm -- Miles of Smiles (restored by the Museum of Modern Art) and Circus Clowns (from a print from MoMA and a nitrate of r2 from LoC). The feature is the restoration by Library of Congress, with a new theatre organ score by yours truly; the shorts have piano scores.

The disc also includes two newsreel selections (with piano accompaniment) from 1921 and 1924. They are particularly interesting as they mix winking publicity gags (Baby Peggy, in riding togs, on a horse) with ostensibly candid views of her enjoying the sunshine with her sister and mother. The candid shots are only a bit less contrived than the others, but there is one lovely closeup of Peg with her mother when for a few seconds the Baby Peggy mask falls and we see a little girl's unabashed pleasure at simply spending time with her mom.
