I like seeing Grapevine get into Blu-ray releases but its premiere release is a bit puzzling: THE PHANTOM HONEYMOON (1919). If the image quality is tops then I'll enjoying seeing it:

Actually, Grapevine has put out some excellent releases including LUCREZIA BORGIA (1922) a few years back. They're trying so I won't knock them.

They're actually have a great sale: all three of their new silent releases for around $42 (the Blu-ray release is not included).

Mike Gebert alert: one of the three is a Duvivier film.

Seriously though, are they that bad? I mean like Alpha bad? Sometimes I can take a a damaged print but the worst is when they have a horrid needledrop score where the Charleston plays over a dramatic scene shot in 1917.

Their image quality varies over the shop, but Jack Hardy tries to get the best print available. If a better one comes along later, he upgrades for a minimal cost.

As for the scores, they're running organ scores these days, written for the movie.

Overall I am fine with the Grapevine quality. It is not the Blu-Ray of Wings, which is gorgeous. But, Grapevine is miles better than Alpha, which is often unwatchable.

As for the music, they do have organ scores as was mentioned. I would stop short of saying the scores are really good. The scores on Ed's releases are better.

Thanks for bringing my attention to the Duvivier release.

I note an interesting thing about the film...

The climax is a death-defying chase up through the skeleton of the Eiffel Tower.

You know what else has a chase up the Eiffel Tower? The Man on the Eiffel Tower, Burgess Meredith's only directorial effort, which is based on the same Georges Simenon novel as... Duvivier's La Tete d'un Homme, which is on the Eclipse set. Curious.

According to the infallible folks at Wikipedia, The Man on the Eiffel Tower is based on the Simenon novel. Given the fact that Simenon seemed to knock them off as often as he tried a new whore (as we have observed elsewhere, in order to compensate for his latent homosexuality), the movie might have been based on the book, or it might have been a novelization.

Better than needledrop I guess, but I'm not a big fan of organ scores.
