25% Off Sale Now at Deepdiscount.com

Post by Jim Harwood » Sun Nov 09, 2008 2:56 pm

Everyone,

Deepdiscount.com is currently having a 25% off sale which provides an additional 25% off of their already reduced prices. So, when titles like THE GENERAL come out on Tuesday, you'll be able to get quite a bit taken off of the price. They would normally sell this disc for $21, but with the sale that knocks another $5 off. Also, free shipping and no sales tax.

The sale goes until 11-23, so if you wait you can also get the new Fairbanks box set too!

The promo code is SUPERSALE. Not good on pre-orders so make sure all orders are done after release date.

Unfortunately, the Fairbanks box set has been pushed to December.

Pre-orders may be discounted if the street date falls within the sale dates. DVD Planet also has a concurrent sale (code is 25OFFSALE), better if you're looking for a Criterion title.

I picked up Kino's 2 disc versions of The General and The Last Laugh, which DVD Beaver had issues with.

Still saving for the Borzage/Murnau box.

I bought Kino's Last Laugh, watched the feature, and found absolutely nothing wrong with it. I love the DVD Beaver site, but this whole business about "combing," which is their main complaint about Kino releases in general, puzzles me a little. The only way, usually, I can see this phenomena--caused by transferring from a PAL source--is in slo mo, or frame by frame, on my computer screen. The only time I've seen it in normal viewing is in the ballet sequence in Phantom of the Opera (1929 version) put out by Milestone. Maybe I have slower eyeballs than Gary Tooze, but on my 42" plasma screen I don't see the problem in Kino's Last Laugh. For a favorable review, check out DVD Savant's: http://www.dvdtalk.com/dvdsavant/s2745last.html

The rendition of the Photoplay restoration on Milestone's DVD is unwatchable throughout, not just the ballet sequence. I've never seen strobing that bad. The disc is worth it for the extras though, including the original 1925 version, which I find superior, even though there's no Technicolor bits.

Just ordered the Modern Musketeer set from DVD Planet ($47). You can get the 25% discount now if you put the item in your wishlist first and then move it to your cart, do not order from the item's main description page. Enter the code (25OFFSALE or SAVE) and apply. If the word "pre-order" appears next to the name, it won't work. Clear cookies and try again.
