Anna Pavlova in The Dumb Girl of Portici

Shameless self-promotion, a Film Comment blog posting about Lois Weber's movie: http://www.filmcomment.com/blog/lois-we ... l-portici/" target="_blank

Shameless confession: I fell hard for Pavlova after seeing the restoration.

And well you should fall for Anna! She had an incredible face and not a bad little dancer from what I hear. :D Thanks for a great article!

Weber was a fine director- If she had a weak point it was her titles, which she wrote herself. They can be a bit heavy handed.

Great article, Daniel! Am looking forward to watching both this restoration and Shoes as well.

The Youtube clip of Pavlova performing the Dying Swan is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Ever.

We are very happy to announce that the restored THE DUMB GIRL OF PORTICI will be having its European premiere on October 8 at the London Film Festival! Amy and I will be introducing it but the real reason to come is for the live score by the brilliant Stephen Horne. I've now seen the film over a dozen times this past year, but I'm really excited to hear his score!

It should be noted that under the programming of the BFI's Julie Pearce, there will be some amazing silents at the film festival -- perhaps the best list of any major film festival this year. You can read about the program here: https://silentlondon.co.uk/2017/08/31/l ... t-preview/. I'm dying to see SHIRAZ but I'll be missing it by just a few days. :(

I had the great luck to see this in San Francisco earlier this year, with Mr. Horne accompanying, and can vouch for it being one hell of a movie. Ms. Weber was really something.
