New book SLAPSTICK DIVAS: THE WOMEN OF SILENT COMEDY

Unread post by Steve Massa » Thu Jul 06, 2017 11:23 am

Hi everyone
Just wanted to announce the release of my new opus SLAPSTICK DIVAS: THE WOMEN OF SILENT COMEDY.

It's 633 pages, with 430 illustrations, and covers over 500 ladies who worked hard during the silent era to make audiences laugh. It's available in hardback ($40) and softbound ($30) through BearManor Media, and here's the link to it on amazon.com:

https://www.amazon.com/Slapstick-Divas- ... tick+Divas" target="_blank

So far I've gotten some kind words from Leonard Maltin - "Steve Massa is doing heroic work for film buffs and historians - and, for that matter, anyone who loves silent comedy. These talented women deserve to be remembered and rediscovered."

- a very nice review in SIGHT & SOUND, and also from Tim Lussier at SILENTS ARE GOLDEN:

CLASSIC MOVIE HUB is having a free giveaway contest for the book:

and is also posting blogs by Yours Truly on aspects of the book:

I've also had a nice chat with Nitrateville's Mike Gebert, which is now Episode 8 of the Nitrateville Radio Podcasts

Just got the hardcover edition! Wasn't really planning on getting it; until I don't know when, but the price was right, at only $51.48 + with free shipping. I hesitated when I noticed I had to pay an extra $2.55 tax, but what the hell? What really gets my goat, is when it's cheaper at Amazon.com compared to Amazon.ca, even with the exchange rate tacked on. :x

What a terrific book!!! I'm so happy to see so many wonderful and forgotten actresses get profiled. The section on Thelma Hill was a lovely surprise - she's one of my favorites. And there are so many pictures I've never see before. You obviously did a ton of research for this book. Congratulations and I hope it's a big success!

Got mine a few days back. Just now had some time to take a look. Wow!! This is fabulous, Steve. Appreciate veritably the amount of research put into this. It's going to be a very fun read! Thanks...

I just read this terrific book, and I must say that I greatly enjoyed the 644-page wow! From Mae Irwin to Flora Zabelle, the brief yet informative bios, many of which are illustrated with pictures I had never seen, makes great filmland fodder . . . and inspired me to stage a Louise Fazenda festival last night on our patio.
