THE SILENT FILMS OF MARION DAVIES book on Amazon

Unread post by drednm » Tue Aug 22, 2017 5:43 am

Designer has come up with two cover designs. Seems off-center to me. What a hassle finding a photo that seemed appropriate and was also high-res enough for a cover. I think she needs to crop the photo and center Davies. But at least it's almost done!

I prefer the second one.

It give the impression of being off-centre because that's how Davies is standing in the window -- off-centre. You can't really fix that by cropping.

Looking at the second cover, at first I thought the photo had been angled slightly so that the left side is forefront and the right side slightly veers into the background (as if the photo was warped to one side when printed). That might actually solve the off-centre problem: just change the "fade" so that the right side is in the forefront and the left side trails out into the background. Since Marion is leaning on the right side, this would bring her more to the front of the cover and would provide better balance.

(Hope this is coherent!)

As for the design, I prefer the first cover. I'm partial to strong pigments, and that black really works for me.

Yes the off-center bothers me and I also noted the darker truer black on the cropped picture... See what the designer has to offer today.

I think you fix it by pushing her even further to the right. The off-centeredness looks more on-purpose that way.

That said, although it's not a bad picture and I don't know what the other choices are, it doesn't seem to sum up Davies to me as many more glamorous or obviously comical images might.

Exactly what I was thinking Mike. But none of my choices were high-res enough for a cover. At least it's not a glam shot. The one I wanted was of her ringing the bell in Little Old New York but couldn't find a good enough picture.

This was my first idea.... I flipped the picture and toned it. It's off center but the type balances it and the picture captured the spirit of Davies I was going for......

Yeah, that one has a better impact despite "less quality."

Not sure if I'm going with Kindle.... I don't think it would work with all the graphics.

I like the first option the best, the picture in the window with the black bars. The black background helps to alleviate any appearances that it was unintentionally off-center and the photo is very nice.

PS. I'm so sorry I totally forgot to send you a scan of that lobby card!

That's a very eye-catching cover, I am glad you are getting it on paper print. I have yet to update to Kindle and other digital devices for books.
Thank you Ed.

???? Beats me. Got it in an Amazon.com package with another book I'd ordered earlier. Was on my doorstep by 11:00 AM this morning. It didn't come USPS, though, but by UPS. That's unusual, too, for me; Amazon's orders usually just come by regular post.

One thing I observed with Create Space is that they use different facilities for producing a small number of books (say, 1-5) than for a larger quantity (20+). There are tiny but perceptible differences between the covers in particular— and the larger order took longer to come.

Both are of good quality, but they're slightly different in feel.

I also made the mistake of ordering thru CS for the author discount ... LOL.... It's odd that the source (and the price) is the same but buying thru Amazon still nets you faster shipping. Who knew? My books are not even scheduled to arrive til Friday.... basically a whole week.

One order shipped from Greensboro, NC; the second order shipped from West Columbia, SC. Who knew?
