IF MY COUNTRY SHOULD CALL (1916) - 24 mins
THE PLACE BEYOND THE WINDS (1916) - 39 mins

That's what I get for not paying attention to the emails I get from Ben. Had to order it today.

I watched the DVD this morning. To be honest, I was more interested in seeing the films than excited, but came away very satisfied. I am a Lon Chaney fan, so seeing his early work is a treat and these films didn't disappoint. Even with the missing footage they felt pretty complete. At times they were quite melodramatic, which was common for films from that time period, but for me wasn't a distraction (although some scenes prompted a slight giggle). Kudos to Jon C. Mirsalis for the restoration and great scores and thanks to Ben Model for releasing another great DVD!

Be sure to listen if you haven't to the NitrateVille Radio with Jon Mirsalis, talking about this release.

I wish more Universal films from this era survived. The scant few that I've seen are above par in visuals and story line. The films on the LON CHANEY: BEFORE THE THOUSAND FACES are no exception.

Even with missing footage they are still fun to watch.

For those who read lips they are fun also.

In the monvie werhe Lon played the doctor there is one cringe worthy line in the traveling show melodrama style.

Always ready to see a Lon Chaney film, but be careful what you wish for. This DVD was not worth the money. Chaney is not prominently featured in any of them, and what time he is on the screen is not up to his usual performance. That's because he wasn't given much to work with. Mother's Atonement was particularly bad. Sorry for the negativity, but I think those iffy about purchasing it might find it useful.
