Grapevine's new Blu-ray of DUCKS & DRAKES -- New HD scan?

Post by WaverBoy » Sun Feb 11, 2018 2:37 am

Ed Lorusso announced on various FB silent film groups that his Kickstarter project of DUCKS AND DRAKES is now on BD-R through Grapevine:

I'm curious to know how much the visual quality will be improved. Did Grapevine do a fresh HD scan?

Grapevine went back to the original LOC files I had received and decided to go Blu. I have not seen the results so I can't say anything to that. They seem to think the result is terrific. They may also be coming thru with Enchantment on Blu ... again from my original LOC files. I have faith that their technical skills and equipment surpass mine. I did send them my notes on intertitles I repaired or re-timed etc. I also sent them a finished copy so they could time the music, etc. I have not seen the results.

That said, I have no idea if Jack and Jason do all the work themselves or if there is a Grapevine staff. ... or if they burn/press their own own disks or farm them out.

Thanks for the info. Do you know if the original LOC scan was done in HD?

You know, to be honest I don't remember. I think the Grapevine info said it was a 1080 scan but I have no idea what that means.

I just picked this up from Grapevine. Quite a significant upgrade. Much sharper and looks better in motion too. And it's a very entertaining film. Buy immediately!

Thank you so much for collaborating with Grapevine, Ed! We Blu-ray aficionados really appreciate it! I'm buying ENCHANTMENT as soon as it hits as well.

They have the technical skills and apparently an in-house Blu-ray making gizmo.

All LoC scans of 35mm are usually done in 2K, but at the time Ed's project was done many were also being done in HD.
