5 minus 1 historical flashbacks in Allen Holubar’s 1921 Man-Woman-Marriage starring his wife, Dorothy Phillips now on EYE’s youtube page. The 4th flashback set amid Roman debauchery plus its modern-day parallel involving the wife politically opposing her corrupted husband, is missing. Too feminist or too sexy? Is the brief, stuck-on shot at the end of this print, of a costumed Phillips clinging to a baby, from this missing segment? I think so. Is the brief shot, at 1:22, amongst the Palace of Fine Arts Roman columns in San Francisco? The 2nd flashback has major bird smooching (minute 27).
On-screen credits list “Gedrukt door: Viola Lawrence” which translates "printed by" or "pressed by", but must mean "edited by" -cuz that’s what she did. I submitted an IMDb update incl. an additional cinematographer, William C. McGann (misspelt). Keaton must have seen this, as McGann was soon hired to shoot Three Ages. McGann then for while specialized in historical short subjects, which suggests he was tasked with those segments in MWM.

I just watched this and coincidentally, my brother-in-law, who has lived in the Netherlands for quite some time, did a little translating for me. He also told me that this is an older form of Dutch. That might affect translation. I didn't know that the Dutch language had changed that much since 1921.
As for the film, I had read that they claimed it cost $300,000 to make. While I could see some spending on the screen, it didn't look that indulgent. Maybe a good portion of it was spent on the Roman segment.

Dutch has officially changed its spelling at least twice since 1921.

I have been trying to do a translation to either English or Spanish, but I have been postponing it because that involves to manually copy the entire text.
I don't care how hard it is to do a translation (I don't understand the language), but I have done it before.

It looks as if First National had trouble when the film was first released, possibly due to its length. It is the only nine reel film listed in First National's catalogue at that time. The film was released in February of 1921 at 9 reels and over 9000 Ft of film. It was also released in a few other places without much fanfare and First National put a salesman on it to help promote the movie in upstate (western) New York. It was soon offered as either a nine reel film or as an eight reel film through First National. The only film that they had released with a choice of lengths.
Dorothy Phillips referred to it as an eight reel film. My guess is that the Roman segment was considered too long or was disliked in some way and was removed. Everyone praised the Amazon segment but nothing was said, by the critics, about the Roman segment.
