Here's
the story in the Hollywood Reporter on this amazing collection of promotional stills from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari going up for auction at Sotheby's.
And here's
the actual Sotheby's page where you can zoom in on the detailed scans of each photo. It's wonderful to see the detail in the sets, makeup and so on.

Who would have thought, these items could be worth a large sum of money back in the silent era of film.
These photographs are simply wonderful. I moved recently to a small town and make the rounds to other ones around me finding interesting items related to "old" films in their second hand and antique shops, but nothing like this. Maybe one day I'll find an extremely rare silent film poster or better yet a lost silent film. Oh well, one can only hope.

Hope the ebay seller's don't get wind of that price then all the stills on line might develop some inflation.lol

Can't afford the stills, but at least I know how to right-click and save some nice big un-watermarked Sotheby's scans to my external hard drive. Strictly for my own personal use and enjoyment, of course.

Somewhat unrelated, but does any artefact from the 1920s expressionist films survives?
