If you synchronise subtitle 29 in the .SRT file (Before the temple of Adonis ...) with that intertitle on the streamed video, then by the time you get to subtitle 31 (Adonis, the god of spring..) the video is 3 seconds ahead. It jumps further out, rapidly, subtitle 38 (Spare me Menelaus..) the video is a whopping 12 seconds ahead of the subtitles.

This is not a linear displacement that can easily be corrected nor is there a difference that is explainable by framerates. The only way I can see to line these subtitles up with the streamed video, is manually, line by line. That Arte broadcast must have been quite different.

Nice to see this comparative rarity. Unfortunately marred by strange compression artifacts and macro-blocking in shadows...and there are a lot of shadows.

The existing subtitle files are for an earlier edition, which means any combination of: different source materials, different ordering, different frame rates, etc. I just manually resync most of the title cards to subtitles; sometimes that allows for the next few subtitle to be timed somewhat well without manually intervening.

This newer version has more material than the earlier one, including more title cards. So, in "Helena" part one, there are several title cards with no corresponding subtitles in the .srt file. For example, in part 1 at 25:04 there is a title card that says, "Von den Priestern mit dem göttlichen Gürtel Aphroditens geschmückt begab sich Helena zum Adonisfest auf Cythera." ("Helen, adorned by the priests with the sacred belt of Aphrodite, went to the Festival of Adonis on Cythera.") Nothing in the subtitle file for that.

The source material for the title cards is different in this version as well, so some of the translations in the subtitle files are different. One of the subtitles says, "The Greek princes are united in singing your praises. Take this crown of Adonis and place it at dawn on the head of the winner of the chariot race." But the German text on-screen translates to something more like, "The princes of Greece are gathered to pay homage to Aphrodite with competitions. Take this wreath and consecrate it at the Altar of Adonis to decorate the winner of the chariot race at sunrise."

The subtitle files have a few odd entries that don't seem to correspond to anything in the movie, or maybe are way out of order, like "Who rewards this shepherd with the stature of a hero?"

At least the title cards are legible, unlike the bad handwriting and jumbled Germanic print of "The Student of Prague".

- October 1 to 4: DER KAUFMANN VON VENEDIG/The Merchant of Venice (Germany 1923)
- October 18 to 21: SOL' SVANETI/Salt for Svanetia (USSR 1930)
- October 29 to November 1: DIE FLAMME/The Flame (Germany 1922)

I highly recommend DIE FLAMME, the museum's reconstruction of Lubitsch's last European film, with Pola Negri and Alfred Abel. I have seen it and it is impressive.
