Yeah, i was wondering if there were no seats in the boat for anyone but the rower. Not really a very safe passenger service, especially if your passenger is blind.

I did not quite understand the explanation about the print. Maybe a native German speaker can see if I missed something in the German text?
The introduction screen of the video starts with:
"Von DER GANG IN DIE NACHT, der dritten Regiearbeit F.W. Murnaus, hat nur ein Originalnegativ ohne Titel im Reichsfilmarchiv überlebt, das über Gosfilmofond in Moskau und das Staatliche Filmarchiv der DDR ins Bundesarchiv gelangte. Dabei gingen die Rollen des dritten Akts verloren, die in Moskau noch umkopiert worden waren."
Which I understand to mean in English:
"For JOURNEY INTO THE NIGHT, the third directorial work by F. W. Murnau, only one original negative, without titles, survived in the Reichsfilmarchiv, which reached the Federal Archives via Gosfilmofond in Moscow and the State Film Archive of the GDR. The reels for the third act that had been copied in Moscow were lost."
The last sentence is the strange part. Reels for the third act were copied (good) and lost (bad)? How did that happen? Both the original and copies were lost? And was act three filled in by other material (like prints, rather than the negative), or are we to understand that it remains lost? The video does have a "3. Akt." and "Ende des dritten Aktes".
So... was gibt?

Surely you mean:
Was ist los?
It looks as if the third reel was lost somewhere in the transfer from Gosfilmofond via the GDR National Film Archive to the Bundesarchiv. Fortunately a copy had been made of it at Gosfilmofond so the restoration uses that instead of the camera negative, which it uses for the rest of the film. This is to explain differences in image quality.

Thanks, Arndt.
What I found most intriguing about the film was Veidt's very very long fingers. So long they looked like talons. I wonder if Murnau thought of Veidt and the use of his hands later on when he made NOSFERATU. Much of the imagry was the same - Veidt standing ramrod straight in the boat, hovering (SPOILER) over his prostrate victim, and those preternaturally long, white, fingers set against that all-black ensemble. One could even call Der maler the missing link between Cesare and Nosferatu - All Murnau did was exagerate Schreck's performance in the latter.
Which begs the question - did Murnau ever seriously consider Veidt for the vampire?

Thank you for continuing to keep us informed of the new releases on their Vimeo! Makes me wish I knew how to read German. I'm guessing the shorter ones, like Cupid which hasn't been released on disc in English as far as I know, should be easy enough to figure out just from the action alone.

Another preview and demonstration of the music syncing for "The Golem" (1920). Sound quality is excellent.

Now I am starting to think that they really are working on a new release of "The Golem". They're not just kidding.
This preview ends with a title card that says, "Demnächst..." ("Soon...").

No mask on that guy, so he could give you a dreaded respiratory disease. Silicosis.

I remember watching this on video at a friends house a few years back. When i saw him come in with the basket, i said "look, the Golem is going grocery shopping!" I thought i was joking, but then he asked for groceries and i nearly fell off the couch laughing. That's still my favorite part of the movie.

This is - translated - my evaluation of Dierteles Ludwig in my (public) film database:
"Building up a personality like Ludwig II with the means of silent film is not easy. Dieterle takes refuge in numerous intertitles, but he succeeds in translating the dilemma of the mentally ill monarch and his political implications into sometimes quite powerful scenes. The film was highly controversial at the time; it had to be significantly cut and the Bavarian government objected to its release by the film review board."

Looks like lots of title cards and lengthy, scribbled letters to read.
I found a promising English subtitle file at
https://www.opensubtitles.org/en/subtit ... -bayern-en , which seems to correspond (at least at the beginning) to the timing of this video. Can't yet vouch for the quality of the translation, though.
Max Schreck is in it.

Thanks for finding the subs, you have to jiggle with the start and end times but they sync up pretty well after that. Seems like a good translation.

The Malwarbytes anti-malware program is blocking that website.

My browser is set up so I don't get much crapware, ads, etc. from web sites. So that just leaves opensubtitles as a crappily-designed site with confusing links going every-which-way and making it unclear how to actually access the desired files. But the site really does have legitimate subtitle files available. I do not think it is a malware site; it's just doing a fantastic job of imitating a malware site.
FWIW, I recommend using Firefox, kept up-to-date, with the browser's security setting for "Enhanced Tracking Protection" set to "strict"; block pop-up windows; "Block dangerous and deceptive content"; and install the extension "Privacy Badger" and use its advanced setting "Learn to block new trackers from your browsing".

Yeah, I'm also running a heavily protected Firefox so don't even notice the spamware.
That said, if anybody wants a copy of the .srt file PM me an email address and I'll forward them along. It's a simple .txt file so utterly safe.

Coming attractions:
February 11 to 14:
DER TOTENTANZ (Danse macabre), Germany 1912
This is Asta Nielsen's first German film, directed by her husband Urban Gad. It is a genuine rarity and not complete, if I remember correctly, but absolutely worth seeing.
March 11 to 14:
Comedies directed by Alice Guy Blaché
I guess the Alice Guy Blaché comedies were actually the ones that accompanied "Der Totentanz" in February, since there are no new silents available right now.

This is neither a horror nor a circus film. The eleven devils of the title are a soccer team. An entertaining film that was released on an Edition Filmmuseum DVD some years ago.

Sort of. You can find news about upcoming streams from their body of restorations here:

Sometimes you can see the schedule for the next month or so but currently it only shows the next film to be streamed.
DIE ELF TEUFEL is streaming now. Enjoy!

You also mentioned the German silent film magazine,
https://www.stummfilm-magazin.de/ . (See above, Sept. 16 messages in which I asked about schedules.)
Though when I have skimmed over that publication, I have found it difficult specifically to find online presentations. Various types of events -- in-person, online, etc. -- are mixed together and also appear in different lists, maybe depending on venue or something else.

I do not quite understand what you are saying. Are you complaining that the website is not offering you the information in a way that is easy for you to digest? This is a website which a genuine fan of silent films operates as a service to all other film lovers and not for profit. I for one am very grateful to him for this service. If the site does not come up to your standards I suggest you start a website and try to do a better job. Again you would have my gratitude.
