International prize for Flicker Alley Fairbanks DVD box set

Post by DShepFilm » Fri Jul 03, 2009 5:25 pm

DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS: A MODERN MUSKETEER was awarded Best Box Set today at Il Cinema Ritrovato annual international DVD competition in Bologna, Italy. Co-producer and publisher Jeffery Masino was on hand to accept.

This is a fairly fierce contest; for example, the 2008 candidates included entries from The Criterion Collection, Carlotta Films of France, Svenska Filminstitute, Editions Montparnasse of France, Milestone Film and Video, Gaumont, British Film Institute, Eureka/Masters of Cinema, Transit Film/Ufa of Germany, Edition Filmmuseum, Ripley's Films of Italy, Re-Voir of France, and All Day Entertainment.

Not only did our own Flicker Alley come out on top of this impressive heap; it's also their second triumphant year in a row, since the 2008 winner was GEORGES MELIES: FIRST WIZARD OF CINEMA.

Obviously this would have been impossible without the special contributions of our film partners, Lobster Films (Paris) and the Danish Film Institute (Copenhagen) and from our wonderful musicians, The Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, Philip Carli, Eric Beheim, Robert Israel, Frederick Hodges. And then there's moi aussi --

David,

Congratulations! To all of you! I've had more fun watching those 11 films than any set I've ever bought. "A Modern Musketeer", the film itself, was quite a revelation after the disgusting quality of the old truncated version which circulated for years. Back in 1982 I had the very distinct pleasure, while working on a project in California, of having breakfast with Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. His early comment, after he found out I was a fan of both his father and him, was that he regretted that no one watched his father's films anymore, that they were so good. This was at the tip of the VHS revolution, and he lived long enough to see some of that. This project of yours and Flicker Alley and Lobster and so forth is a realization of which he would have been proud.

David, after all you have done for silent films over the decades, it's an honor to the award that you accept it. As for the folks at Flicker Alley, congratulations. Keep up the great work.

:D I already commented elsewhere. Nevertheless, Wonderful news David Congratulations once again to everyone involved! Keep up the great work! The Gilbert set is outstanding, and has left us all howling for more. Dreaming of a follow-up set of HIS HOUR/CAMEO KIRBY. Though both might still be owned by Warner's and Fox respectively, I'm not sure.

Before my previous post was deleted, I was trying to drum up some other ideas. How about a Colleen Moore, Talmadge Sisters, and or early Marion Davies project? And didn't you say last year that you had a fine grain print of De Mille's THE ROAD TO YESTERDAY? :o

Mike,

No, it was on a different forum. I wasn't sure David had a chance to read what I said. And I don't remember what it was myself either. :?
