The Motion Picture Academy building, on Wilshire Blvd. in Beverly Hills, has just launched a tribute to legendary producer Irving Thalberg on their 4th floor gallery.

Aside from some GREAT photographs, there are costumes, notes, posters and film clips.

For those of you who want to see Lon Chaney's makeup case -- up close & personal, get down there! They not only have on display his makeup case, but the mirror he held, the wig from THE UNHOLY THREE, plus a copy of the script THE HYPNOTIST (aka LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT) and a inter-office memo relating to Chaney.

There is a new bio coming out in November on Thalberg by Mark Vieria, which is quite good.

Michael,

Thanks for the tip! I'm looking forward to Viera's book - I enjoyed the coffee table one on Thalberg last year.

Do you know if the Academy is planning on doing any screenings/book signings in honor of the release? (although granted, the MGM films (with the exception of non-scored silents) from that period are probably the easiest to see thanks to TCM)

I went to the exhibit last weekend, it's ace. Saw the makeup kit! Saw the letter Thalberg wrote firing von Stroheim! Saw the dress Adrian designed for Mae Murray (jeez, was she tiny or what?) Saw two dresses from Marie Antoinette! Saw Novarro's armor from Ben Hur!

If you are in town, don't miss it.
