Richard you obviously haven't been through this on here before. When the March TCM schedule came out there was invariably (INVARIABLY) a flood of concerned posts about "What Happened To The Silents On The Schedule?" and we had to explain that every year TCM does a month of Oscar-related programming (Films that either won or were nominated for something)Richard P. May wrote:With February being 31 days of Oscar, there are hardly any silents to pick from. Sorry to say, some of the few silents in the first year of the awards are lost.
Write Ted and Jane? I presume you are being humorous?
Neither of them (especially Jane) have anything to do with TCM any more.
Don't worry, next year you can sit back and smirk at the newcomers.

Yeah, it was pretty much an alt.movies.silent injoke, even (not sure if it ever actually happened here). Although oddly TCM doesn't seem to show the few Oscar silents they do have very much (one year, I remember The Racket and Two Arabian Knights were shown a couple of weeks after, when they would have been perfect 31 Days of Oscar material).
Cinema has no voice, but it speaks to us with eyes that mirror the soul. ―Ivan Mosjoukine

Well at least they're showing THE RACKET and THE CROWD during their February Oscar month this time, and in reasonably prime time for a change.
However, I've always wondered why they don't program more of the silent Oscar nominees in their library specifically during that month, leaving the rest of the year for new discoveries on non-Oscar-month Silent Sundays. In the past they've run WINGS, SUNRISE, TWO ARABIAN KNIGHTS, THE CIRCUS, CHANG, THE JAZZ SINGER, and WHITE SHADOWS IN THE SOUTH SEAS, but again usually outside of the Oscar month. They could certainly run THE PATENT LEATHER KID, and it would be nice to see SEVENTH HEAVEN or THE LAST COMMAND if they can get them in their leasing packages. There are plenty of Oscar-winning or nominated silents that deserve the extra exposure the Oscar month theme can give them.
