Among the titles posted this afternoon are Flesh, a 1932 drama with Wallace Beery and Karen Morley and directed by John Ford; The Conquerors, also from 1932 and featuring Richard Dix and Ann Harding with direction by William Wellman; and Riptide, from 1934 with Norma Shearer and Herbert Marshall (in bug costumes during the opening scene, no less), direction by Edmund Goulding.
Two other 30s titles that haven't been mentioned here yet are Ex-Mrs. Bradford (36), an amusing comedy-mystery with Jean Arthur and William Powell (and Lila Lee in a supporting part) and Oil for the Lamps of China (35) with Pat O'Brien and Josephine Hutchinson.

Very cool; four more silents, including the forever unavailable THE MAGICIAN. One of these days I need to try and place my first order with the WA again. The first time I tried, around a year ago, the site just wouldn't let me, no matter how hard I tried. I hope they've made it somewhat functional since then.
It's a bit slow and clumsy, but I've never had a problem ordering from it.WaverBoy wrote:Very cool; four more silents, including the forever unavailable THE MAGICIAN. Why order from WB unless they have a super dooper price?
Noting the Joan Crawford Daughters/Maidens which I have on a Laserdisc double but will buy these, where's the third one, Our Blushing Brides(1931) which has not been available to date in any form to my knowledge.
Love the idea of those doubles. Illicit was on Laserdisc as a Pre-Code. But the one I have waited for is Big Hearted Herbert(1934) which I saw a 35mm nitrate screening in a small theatrette in-built into a back room of a house in Norwood/London, I think, a room rented by the owner of the print from the people who lived in the house. They owners did not know about the nitrate prints. This print was unspliced and mint at that time. Maybe lost now for all I know as this was early 1971. Also screened was a Grand National title with Fay Wray and a Gaumont Newsreel with the Dionne Quintuplets in.

!. they are selling a lot of titles you can not get from other sources.
2. IF you can get them from other sources the WB discs are better.
3. Laser Discs are fine- IF you can get them and IF you have a player. It's easier to find an Edison phonograph and wax cylinders than a decent laser disc player and good discs.

These cry out for a triple DVD set - I know I'd shell out for it!moviepas wrote:Noting the Joan Crawford Daughters/Maidens which I have on a Laserdisc double but will buy these, where's the third one, Our Blushing Brides(1931) which has not been available to date in any form to my knowledge.
I've never seen `Blushing Brides', though `Our Dancing Daughters' is an all-time favourite. `Our Modern Maidens' was fun enough, but it was all of the casting against type that really made the earlier film.
(It was also the first and only time I've ever been able to write to a silent film star - Anita Page - about how much I admired their performance!)

Absolutely true. A couple of musicians have recently released (for publicity, but still) new music in the Edison format.FrankFay wrote: 3. The Warner Archive has at least one sale every month. You can join the WB Insider Rewards program for free, which includes a 10% discount on all WA titles (down from 25%, alas) plus a 20% birthday discount. They offer multi-disc sets and Valu-Paks, which can reduce the price per disc up to 50 percent. And you can get free or reduced shipping in certain quantities.
Combining any and all of the above can result in insanely low prices. On one of my most recent orders, I got the price all the way down to $6.59 per disc.
TCM has shown ZENDA more than once. I'd also assume THE CONQUERING POWER will show up at some point too. We will definitely see all the silents at some point. It's just a matter of Warner Bros. still having more than 3,000 titles covering almost 100 years to choose from. But their intent is to release absolutely everything.
Gagman 66 wrote:Wow, ZENDA is Public Domain. So it bodes well for other Public-Domain titles I would think. Good to see THE MAGICIAN. But what about MARE NOSTRUM, THE VIKING, and NOAH'S ARK? How about any of the Chaney's? Nothing yet. The Two Crawford/Page titles I must say are quite a surprise. Though I have them both from MGM Laser-disc.

Coffee Dan. That's great but one has to be in USA to do any of these things. Disney's special club is the same thing: Exclusive titles on DVD for members only and to US addresses. Makes it hard for a serious collector on a state pension. Occasionally a title gets released in my country but not often or is lacking extras and Fox is a big offender of this but then later issues the disc again with the extras which they should have included in the first place. Currently there are a lot of standalone films on offer with no trailers etc. They range from $3 to $8 and are quality transfers of Universal and other titles mostly from the 1950s but a few vintage titles. I only found these by chance and the price was $4 & $5 and I got them for $3 each. But then it is too much too soon to chose from.
This is in Australia.

while you may not get the same price deals, you can still order the WB Archive titles and have them sent to Australia. Try moviesunlimited, they ship to me all the time, and have a sale on now

Re films to Australia WB collection. I get from DeepDiscount who have had sales, in fact, they started with special sale prices when they took on Warner Archive. They have a superior delivery rate but don't get a faulty and they will make you ship back even a complete box set and I have to foot the return postage. Luckily most faulty WB's I can repair to a playable condition but the replacements of two I had to return as unfixable and one noticeably so on visual inspection. This was Disc 4 of the Jazz Shorts and there was a wide groove area in the middle of the disc for starters and the disc would not play. A couple of others had the groove but thinner & were OK. But they said I was too late telling them & thus I had to return the whole set but not before I had backed of the 5 good discs. The replacement showed Disc 4 with no groove and played well. Telling them that I had these mostly on Laserdisc & a box set is not played thru straight away like a single movie meant nothing to them. Under our consumer rules a genuine faulty(visible as it is) is replaceable or refundable any time. I have spent over A$20 returning stuff to them, the other was Rio Rita that pegged out at 30mins and that was that. The replacement was OK. Amazon have some titles but they are too expensive but their customer service is superb for these kind of problems of which I have years of experience with them to both our mutual advantage.
MU I have used direct but to get the best price now for me is thru Turner who then exports the order to MU for delivery. I have fund their Customer Service a bit flippant and rarely get an e-mail when the stuff ships. They have revised their delivery rates a little like Amazon have so it is a little better. MU also have oodles of titles unavailable elsewhere and from small DVD-R people whose rights are more than suspect. MU is older than many of the on-lines around today including Amazon & DeepDiscount.
I have to use Turner for TCM exclusives such as Ma & Pa I have yet to get and some Deanna Durbin material(2 sets both completely different in packaging & price from each other).
DeepDiscount have the Columbia MODS and I ordered a few from them before they actually posted a publicity page on them, several days earlier, in fact. I took the punt and put a title or two in and they were there & a price a little cheaper to Columbia/Sony but then I could not go to Sony as I can't go to the Disney Club to get otherwise unavailable material elsewhere.
What I do need is to win the lottery to keep up with these treasures whilst they are available.

Today I happened to receive an e-mail from MovieMail UK and I find Odeon DVD label is releasing as replicated discs The Sky's The Limit(1943, Astaire), The Fallen Sparrow, Berlin Express(1949), all RKO films. RKO seems to belong to Universal for home video, at least, in UK so I suggest they might be sublicencing like they do thru a firm in Australia called Bounty with their $3-$10 titles & no extras. I am awaiting to receive from UK the RKO released Suicide Squadron(Dangerous Moonlight) which I had never seen available before nor actually seen but always liked the theme, Warsaw Concerto, by Richard Addinsell. Addinsell wrote pieces for US-born, very British comedienne, Joyce Grenfell and was a sometime pianist for this lady who appeared as a police woman in love with the Sergeant(an Australian born in my hometown, died at 94) in the St Trinians movies with Alastair Sim. Grenfell described Addinsell as asexual.
Word is that the following Chaney films will be coming soon from the WA:
MR. WU
THE MONSTER
THE UNHOLY THREE
HE WHO GETS SLAPPED
MOCKERY
Tom Weaver posted about them on the Classic Horror Film Board. Says he saw them listed in a WA ad in Fangoria and that he doesn't remember which version of THE UNHOLY THREE was getting released. Kinda disappointed that they won't be proper DVDs, but at least they'll be available in good quality at last. I'll be picking them all up for sure.

I hate to nitpick, but I really hope WB has remastered HE WHO GETS SLAPPED, THE MONSTER and THE UNHOLY THREE. They're running the same 1" transfers with that were done some 30 years ago on TV. "They don't look as good as they could" is an understatement.

I missed He Who Gets Slapped on Laserdisc as it was out of print when I started collecting these in the mid-1950s. So I have nothing to compare with if this discs comes out. But George F had promised this on a regular DVD before the bubble burst.
I have just received two Columbia/Sony MOD: New Orleans Uncensored & then I got Winter A-Go-Go. The former is b&w and the quality is superb. The latter is color & likewise with excellent color registration & sound. If this is not a fluke & Sony are using restored masters for this program then they are serving us well. I note that there were no trailers(something Columbia don't often use or if they do, it's often for other films as publicity) & the discs were not full out like WB to the edge leaving an unrecorded outer section. They are stamped Protected & Region 1 on the cover.
Both DVDs played like a HD restoration on my plasma without blocking etc when close up to the screen & Winter's color scheme is pleasing to me.
I await A Song to Remember & Song Without End which are both due this coming week. Columbia mods are seemingly shipped quicker than the Warner titles from DD from order placement meaning better stock delivery, perhaps.

I guess we'll just have to wait. Patience, they tell me, is a virtue.Gagman 66 wrote:Good news, but how about TELL IT TO THE MARINES and THE BLACKBIRD? Also WEST OF ZANZIBAR and WHERE EAST IS EAST?
*snip*
I'm more curious about/hopeful that they'll replace the needle-drop score on the 25 UNHOLY. And use a better source print for the transfer.

Patience. The Warner Archive Collection is a ten-year initiative. Every film in the library will be coming out.Gagman 66 wrote:Good news, but how about TELL IT TO THE MARINES and THE BLACKBIRD? Still not able to load any TCM forum threads, Can someone send me the January TCM schedule? Is there anything on it that is new? Thanks.
WAC has recently been releasing double features, so I would bet the two UNHOLY THREEs will be released as one package.
