I only know of one copy of Annie Laurie, a 35mm print held by Library of Congress. Don't know if it's ever been transferred to video, it certainly hasn't been released to the home video market.

The Fair Coed has been shown somewhere recently, you might search past messages. IIRC, it involves romantic entanglements and girls' basketball at a college. I have the original cue sheet, but I've never seen it.

I have a copy of THE FAIR CO-ED.... no idea where I got it from.... I thought this had been restored in the last few years and shown in Los Angeles.... It's never been on TCM.

It's a funny film with Marion Davies getting interested in college basketball real fast when she discovers the coach is Johnny Mack Brown and her rival (Jane Winton) has her eye on him. Joel McCrea and Lou Costello are among the extras.

Ooh, The Fair Co-Ed is fun stuff. Think Marion Davies doing her best William Haines, as the cocky athlete who gets her comeuppance just in time for the big game. I'd really like to see a restored version of it.

Wasn't there a Broadway show called The Fair Co-Ed around 1914 or so? Is the movie based on that?

The Marion Davies film is indeed loosely based on the 1909 musical that starred Elsie Janis.

Thank you, Ed. I'd mentioned The Fair Co-Ed in passing in my novel, but had forgotten about the Davies movie.

Full disclosure - I don't know much about Davies, other than what I've read in Basinger's Silent Stars and what I've seen in the documentary that Timeline Films did on her - although I have seen Show People and found that very funny.

Why can't they show Rin-Tin-Tin films and those of his clones? Many have survived in 9.5mm prints and are terrific.

Filmoteca devoted a week to them two years ago and I managed to capture a few.

ANNIE LAURIE was offered by the old Forgotten Films on DVD-R. I don't think they are still around. I've seen the film. The 35 Millimeter source material is beautiful, including the Two-Color Technicolor. THE FAIR CO-ED is a movie I hoped would debut on TCM for a long time. Ditto for LITTLE OLD NEW YORK, THE LIGHTS OF OLD BROADWAY, BEVERLY OF GRAUSTARK, TILLIE THE TOILER, and THE CARDBOARD LOVER.

Ed,

:) Yes, in July of 2008 a Theater in L A ran a newly restored 35 millimeter print. I think it was shown in Chicago a few months later. Or maybe the following year.

:o The film has been restored, so was ANNIE LAURIE in 2002. However, neither one has a recorded score that I know of. Same old, same old. I think THE FAIR CO-ED was just part of some funny ladies film festival earlier this year?

If memory serves, doesn't Warners no longer own the rights to ANNIE LAURIE?

I think Warners owns the rights, but they don't have a print. The print is at LOC.

The play THE FAIR CO-ED starred Elsie Janis in 1909. It's an 18 year difference between the play and Marion's film so some updating and adapting is likely in order.

LITTLE OLD NEW YORK, saw it at the LoC in the 90s, beautiful print, staid direction from Sidney Olcott. Im usually turned off of films directed by Olcott. Both LONY and MONSIEUR BEAUCAIRE could've been better films with more imaginative directors.
