We all heard from Found Classics like Upstream and Metropolis (both 1927), what films do you know else were being hought lost and were found the last 5 years ?
I mean also the European ones !!!!

I have heard rumors that Prints of Hound of Baskerville (1929) were found in Poland along with a Mauritz Stiller film Gransfolken 1913.... but since 2009 I have nothing heard from it again !

Also there were rumours about existing Prints of Der Januskopf 1920 ( in European Archives), The Monkeys Paw (1933) which survives somewhere in Fragments ???? Also the same to be said of Stellan Ryes Gendarm Möbius 1913 and Paul Wegeners Sterbende Völker 1921 (which is said also survived incomplete)

Who knows more recently rediscovered Films (I mean last few year) ?

LampyMeier2007,

:? Don't know how far back you want to go? To the Colleen Moore films found about 7 years ago, but still not preserved to Safety-film? Namely SYNTHETIC SIN (1928), and WHY BE GOOD? (1929). The Constance Talmadge comedy EAST IS WEST (1922), restoration now in the final stages, by the Nederlands film museum group. A forgotten 16 Millimeter Safety print of the late Warner Brothers Silent CRIMSON CITY (1928) with Myrna Loy and Anna May Wong was found in Argentina in 2008. However, Jorge reports that the print has no title-cards. So this would need to be pieced back together, and flash cards added. The Mae Murray feature THE GLIDED LILY (1921) was found at the same time. I assume this title does have title-cards. Just getting started. Like the Colleen's, there are several Olive Thomas films out there that are in need of funding to be saved.

I haven't heard anything about a Polish discovery of DER HUND VON BASKERVILLE (1929), but Gosfilmofond has had a print for quite a while.

Only a short fragment survives from THE MONKEY'S PAW (1933). UCLA has it.

Those rumors about DER JANUSKOPF have been around for over 20 years. Supposedly, an Austrian archivist/Conrad Veidt fan claimed to possess a print, but he refused to release it because it wasn't a very good film and would do nothing to enhance Murnau's status. In fact, the gentleman said he owned a print of every single Veidt film except WAHNSINN. Needless to say, he made that claim over two decades ago, and not one single lost Veidt film has ever turrned up from his alleged collection.

Douglas Fairbanks' Mr. Fix-It

Last summer I read in Variety that the sole surviving print of Mr. Fix-It (1918) starring Douglas Fairbanks is now undergoing resoration work at the L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation. That's all I know about this, but it's great news: most of Doug's output from 1918 (a prolific period in his career) is believed to be lost.

Wasn't Paris Bound, Ann Harding's film debut, considered lost for decades?

Yes, that one is being restored. It's planned for the SF Silent FIlm Festival next summer, according to this thread.

I was just adding some info to the Deutsche Kinemathek Lost Films website for the 1916 film The Missing Links, when to my surprise i see that a collector has posted what i take to be a statement that he has the film in 9.5 mm (the posting is in Spanish so i'm not exactly sure). It's a film i'd love to see so i hope a copy makes it to an archive some day.

Here is the Discovery Info Link of Hound of Baskervilles and Gransfolken :

http://www.thelocal.se/21638/20090824/

How much survived of The Monkeys Paw ( I mean minutes/reels )
Is it with sound ?

By the way I have just found this about the (Lost?) film The Life of General Villa (1914) supervised by DW Griffith :

http://www.film-foundation.org/common/m ... d=2&ssid=7

Does that mean that that the full lenght film exists and runs 105 min ?

The spanish collector says there, that he thinks he owns a very condensed version on 9.5mm, but he isn't sure. That version has the title "Who is the culprit?" and a length of 60 meters. Very condensed indeed.

Also found in Argentina was the William S. Hart 1916 film "The Aryan".

Boy, if any swastikas appear in the blankets in that film, we're going to have problems of Birth of a Nation proportions.

I know, you know, anyone reading the recent thread about swastikas in silent films knows -- but I was having a vision of trying to explain that to the protesters outside the Capitol Theater in Rome New York.

It's like trying to explain that a six pointed star isn't an exclusively Jewish symbol, or that a five pointed star with the point at the bottom isn't automatically Satanic.

Well, that would be a logical alternative title, it is a murder mystery. I didn't recognize the name of the collector and i casually googled his name and didn't come up with a website or profile or anything. Does anyone from the site follow up on comments about possible existence of the films? Wouldn't want the collector to think nobody cared! It might be helpful if he could post some frame grabs. I think the cast is fairly distinctive, so if he could get a couple of people in the same shot that might be enough to positively identify. Is 60 meters of 9.6mm something on the order of 8 minutes?

In that case, we won't be too badly off—there were only four of them!

Are you alluding to something?

It's also a old symbol in India [Hindu I think?]. Not that that matters in this case as the symbol is totally tainted and even time won't remove the evil foul stink - nor should it.

Calculated with 18 fps it would be 7:22 min. Here is a very helpful film length calculator:

http://www.cinematography.de/filmruntime_calc.php

Translation:

Bilder/Sekunde = Frames per second
Filmlänge (Meter) = Film length in meter
Filmlänge (Fuß) = Film length in feet
Bilderzahl = Number of frames
Filmdauer = Duration of the film
Berechne = Calculate

I heard quite a weird story this autumn. My very good friend told me that he knows a guy who found a very old movie about Titanic (I'm quite sure he meant <i>Saved from the Titanic</i> by Dorothy Gibson). My friend told also that the movie was sent to the Finnish Movie Archive but because they are short of money, nothing can be done at this time – maybe later. I guess this is just a story.

Let's not be so self-consciously definitive. Before it's unfortunate transformation, the symbol had positive connotations, and that *does* matter, as any non-revisionist would realize.

A few of the older off-campus residences at the university that I attended had swastikas as part of the wooden flooring. Although it may not reflect positively on some of the people I know who lived there, and their lack of appreciation for history, many of them didn't even notice the designs, even at the more "liberal" Arts and Music House.

Speaking of not being able to write "the mob," why is someone even calling that term into question here on the silent film board when we are separate from the sheeple who disdain anything more than a passing recognition of this era of film? Eh?

Ziggy5446 seems somewhat confused about A DOLL'S HOUSE, using the term 'certainly one of their best' as well as a 'stagy and disappointing drama'. He / she won't be the first person to pass off another person's opinion as his / her own. In fact, reading Patrick McGilligan's book on George Cukor, he refers to the original version of ROCKABYE being 'dreadful' despite its being scrapped.

Are Ziggy and McGilligan IMDB editors?
