The Crowd
King Vidor (1928) 98 mins

Vidor’s timeless, yearning masterpiece departed from most Hollywood studio productions at the time in its lack of stars and uncompromisingly realistic, bittersweet look at modern life in the big city. Ostensibly a film about a man, his boring job, the woman he falls in love with and the family they create, the film is a seething, tragic portrait of the human condition. Though not a financial success upon its release, the film today holds an important place in cinema history for its stylistic experimentation and social commentary. Brilliantly shot by Henry Sharp, it was a key influence on many films including Billy Wilder’s The Apartment.
