Canberra Reels 2
100 mins.
Arc cinema, Canberra, ACT
2pm, 2 November 2013
A centennial of movies about Australia's national capital that will jolt memories of the city as it once was.
The program begins with the NFSA’s new restoration of the Raymond Longford directed official film of The Naming of the Federal Capital of Australia (Aust., 1913, 18 mins). Then a look at the modest country town that was Canberra, Australia’s Federal Capital in the early 1930s (Aust., 1934, 10 mins, 35mm); followed by US/Australian director Alfred Goulding’s eccentric docudrama on Canberra in an earlier time of minority Federal government, in Australia Marches No1: Canberra the Federal Capital (Aust., 1942, 9 mins, 35mm).
The session concludes with a look at Canberra life in the late 1950s, in Canberra Today and Tomorrow (Dir: John MARTIN-JONES, Aust., 1950, 10 mins, 35mm), then director Fred Schepisi’s fantasy on the shape of things to come in Tomorrow’s Canberra (Aust., 1972, 34 mins, 16mm).
