Can someone explain to me why COTTAGE ON DARTMOOR is included in the program, "Sweden, the Forgotten Years, 1925-1929?

It's the Swedish version; made in parallel with the UK version as would be common practice in the early sound era. In fact (The British version, at least) A Cottage on Dartmoor was partly sound-on-disc - the cinema sequence at least - but the disc(s) are long lost. Looking forward to seeing it (and you too Dennis)

Well, if it was made in parallel, then it was still the British film industry that made it, not Sweden. There was a Spanish language version of DRACULA made at the same time as the Lugosi DRACULA, but it was still Universal that made it, not Spain. So does that mean German/French parallel versions of films made by Laurel and Hardy/Our Gang/Charley Chase are French and German films?

Miss Du Pont: The "Catalogue des films francais de long metrage," published in 1981, uses this criterion: "If a film has been made with French-speaking actors, by a team which includes people of French nationality, then it is considered to be French even if it has been made abroad."

So they are all Swedish actors in COTTAGE ON DARTMOOR and not someone speaking phonetically? So if Laurel and Hardy/Our Gang etc. use French actors in them in their parallel versions, while the stars speak phonetically, does that make them then French? Cinecon just showed an Our Gang French version that obviously had French-speaking children in it, along with Our Gang and Stepin-Fetchit, speaking BAD phonetic French, but under this definition, it is a French film.

Then also, in that regard, a film made in America, with a vast majority of cast and crew, means that THE ARTIST is an American film, not a French film.

We can keep this up all day, and in fact already did have a (very) long-ago thread on the topic of what constitutes a "foreign-language film" for the purposes of, variously, the tax department, the Academy, some unions, and movieland's adroit accounting system.

The Swedish version is a new one on me. Hope it will become more available. And does El Brendel make an appearance?
