Hey All,
This Thursday November 21st I will be screening a super 8 Blackhawk films print of George Loane Tucker's "Traffic In Souls" (1913) This will be the week of the hundreth anniversary of the release of the film. it was released on November 24th (1913). Director George Loane Tucker who made the film, four years later made actor Lon Chaney a overnight sensation with his film The Miracle Man (1919) about a fake cripple. Traffic In Souls was shot on location at Ellis Island, and Manhattan, and focusing on on forced prostitution (White Slavery) in The United States. The storyline concerns two young Swedish women immigrants who are approached by men soliciting for white slavery under the guise of a legitimate work offer. In the scenes filmed at the Battery, after the women are transported there from Ellis island, real life immigrants can be seen in the background. it was released at a time when the country was undergoing a "moral panic" over the issue of prostitution. The film's release eventually resulted in the adding of "white slavery" to the list of topics banned under the Hays Code. Mary J. Martin will be on piano, and electric ukulele.
Films will be shown every Thursday night through March at 7:30PM at The Schoolhouse in The WOMR Davis Space 494 Commercial St. in Provincetown, MA. There will be a $5 dollar suggested donation to help support WOMR, which is community supported radio in Provincetown. Free popcorn will be supplied by The Provincetown Inn. Beer,Wine, and Soda will be available for donation too.
