Frau Im Mond
Fritz Lang (1928) 108mins
Chauvel Cinematheque, Paddingtom

Lang’s final silent epic is both the first film to portray space-exploration in a serious manner, paying close attention to the science involved in launching a vessel from the surface of the earth to the valleys of the moon and a potboiler that manages to combine espionage, melodrama, and comic-book sci-fi into a story that is delirious and deranged. A cartel of spies co-opts an experimental mission to the moon in the hope of plundering the satellite’s vast stores of gold! When the crew finally reaches their impossible destination, they find themselves stranded in a lunar labyrinth — where the new goal becomes survival. Rocket scientist Hermann Oberth worked as an advisor and this film was later popular among the rocket scientists in Wernher von Braun's circle. Perceiving it as a threat to the secretiveness of their V1 and V2 rocket development programs the Nazis withdrew the film from circulation.
