CAPTAIN SWAGGER (1928, Pathe) Ten years after he
worked at Essanay, Rod LaRocque was doing very
well as a debonair leading man. Here he is teamed
with former Essanay actors Victor Potel as his butler
Jean, and Ulrich Haupt, as flying ace Baron Von
Stahl. The fictional British adventurist Hugh “Bulldog”
Drummond is transplanted to America in this
sophisticated film of prohibition-era life with a bit of
World War I aerobatics thrown in, and Sue Carol is
the woman who captures Drummond’s attention.
