London, UK: THE WHIPPING BOSS (1924 J.P. McGowan) Feb 12, 2020
Posted: Tue Dec 24, 2019 2:35 pm
Wed 12 Feb 2020 7:30pm at The Cinema Museum (limited seating)
The Whipping Boss (J.P. McGowan 1924) is a prison reform propaganda film sponsored by The American Legion. A 16mm print that survives will be screened and it’s discussed by Kevin Brownlow in his 1990 Behind the Mask of Innocence (page 249) in which he says “The scenes of brutality are mostly missing from this print...but the appalling conditions in the cypress swamps are portrayed with documentary realism.” KB mistakes the setting as Oregon, while reviews and descriptions found on Lantern say it’s based on a well-known case in Florida, plus McGowan and his cast shot exteriors at a Louisiana logging camp.
LOC’s silent survival database says Gosfilmofond in Moscow has a complete print.
