Busy couple of weeks for online silent film screenings with live piano from Europe, including these ones free worldwide on YouTube, with an uncoordinated but nicely complementary Robert Louis Stevenson double feature of Kidnapped, 1917, from Kennington Bioscope on June 24th, 19.30 local time London (UTC+1), and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, 1920, from the Hippodrome Silent Film Festival on July 4th, 20.00 local time Bo'ness, Scotland (also UTC+1).

Drop by https://www.youtube.com/kenningtonbioscope to set a reminder for June 24th!
For Episode 5 of the KBTV online, the Kennington Bioscope presents the Edison Film Company’s 1917 film of Kidnapped, Robert Louis Stevenson’s “immortal story of adventure.” The film is the earliest celluloid version to have been produced, based on the Scottish author’s famed ‘boys’ novel’, first published in serial form in ‘Young Folks’ magazine from May to July 1886. “In Scotland in 1751, young David Balfour is shanghaied aboard a ship where he meets Jacobite rebel Alan Breck with whom he escapes to the Scottish Highlands, dodging the redcoats…” The film was preserved and transferred by kind courtesy of the Library Of Congress, and we present it in association with Fritzi Kramer of US-based Movies Silently website, who researched and sourced the film, over-seeing and producing its limited home video release in 2018, crowdfunded via a successful Kickstarter campaign, with over 300 contributors receiving copies of a fine DVD package, designed by Ms Kramer, a graphic designer by trade. Christopher Bird, film collector, director and editor and also good friend and colleague to both the Bioscope, and Movies Silently, was the film’s Associate Producer and Editor for this home release and has kindly assisted in the film’s preparation, along with the Bioscope team, for this premiere online screening.

Kidnapped will be accompanied live by one of our regular expert pianists. The broadcast will be hosted live by film historian Michelle Facey and we are delighted to be welcoming a very special guest to the show, Fritzi Kramer of Movies Silently, who, in addition to granting permission for our use of Kidnapped, has not only designed a super ‘KB & MS’ logo for the film, but will also generously present a specially pre-recorded introduction for the main feature. -http://www.cinemamuseum.org.uk/2020/ken ... pped-1917/

I was really sorry that Hippfest had to be cancelled this year – a week or two earlier and it would have been fine. It’s no secret that it’s one of my favourite festivals, so I am already excited about returning to Bo'ness in 2021.

So I am chuffed to my boots to let you know that on Saturday 4 July, at 8pm (BST) Hippfest will be screening a classic silent horror movie with live accompaniment by the maestro Neil Brand on YouTube. That’s what I call a Saturday night.

The film is … Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1920), starring the Great Profile himself John Barrymore in – spoiler alert – both title roles. It’s a fantastic film and I am honoured to be scribbling the screening notes and delivering a short introduction before the movie. Big thanks to Kino Lorber for supplying the film.

Join this Facebook group and follow Hippfest on your social media of choice to stay updated, although I will edit this post with the YouTube link when it’s available. Please share the details of this event with your friends far and wide, also.

The Nederlands Silent Film Festival also have their next livestreamed YouTube show on June 26th, 20.00 Amsterdam time (19.00 London), UTC+2. I've not seen them mentioned here before, but their previous online live shows have been brilliant.

Kennington Bioscope's follow up show, content to be announced, is July 8th, 19.30 London time as usual.

All shows are nicely in sync with North American daylight hours, (2pm/2.30/3pm eastern, 11am/11.30/noon pacific), hope some of you can make it for a virtual visit!

Thanks everyone who joined us live, we had a wonderful showing of Kidnapped, plus the shorts Robinet's White Suit and The River Pescara to get things going. Join us for the replay if you want to watch again or for the first time!

The Hippodrome Silent Film Festival Jekyll and Hyde screening with Neil Brand's piano performance was wonderful, and good to see another proponent of the piano-cam in action! I was worried about the viewing figures on YouTube, where I seemed to be part of a very select audience, but it turns out all the cool kids were at the simulcast on Facebook, with many hundreds of views and a lively comment box there! Don't know how to embed Facebook, but here's the YouTube link, seems to be staying up at least for the moment.

There is a donation option geared to UK cellphones, they mention on the Facebook page somewhere an email address to make a donation if you're not on a UK carrier.

Well done to all involved!

I enjoyed the screening (though the print seemed pretty dark at times) and the score by Neil Brand was very good, but I have to go on record as really not enjoying the "piano-cam" at all, I find it very distracting, unnecessary (I can hear the music, I know someone's playing), and especially annoying in this case because it actually cuts into the lower right hand corner of the screen.
