The Domitor Association for the Study of Early Cinema announces three evenings of early cinema rarities and restorations, accompanying its four-day conference in Toronto, Canada, June 13-16, 2010. The screenings offer showcases from three international archives, and are open to the public.



June 14, 2010, at the Cinemathèque Ontario, 317 Dundas St. W, Toronto

9.30-11.30 pm
UCLA Film and Television Archive presents its restoration of director Rex Ingram’s CHALICE OF SORROW (1916, Bluebird Productions), starring Cleo Madison. Also playing will be the feature comedy HIS NIBS, with Chic Sale (1920-21, Exceptional Pictures).

The screenings will be preceded by an introduction by Jan-Christopher Horak, director of the UCLA Film and Television Archive. 35mm projection. Pianist: William O’Meara.



June 15, 2010, at Innis Town Hall, 2 Sussex Ave., Toronto

8.00-10.00pm
The Eye Film Institute Netherlands presents BEYOND THE SCREEN, an evening of screenings devoted to the diverse contexts of early film. Films will include:
• early scientific and instructional films (1912-1914);
• films about early Hollywood, including footage of the funeral of Rudolph Valentino, the honeymoon of Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, and more;
• the early expedition movie “His Royal Highness the Duke of Abruzzi’s Expedition to K2” (1909).

The screenings will be preceded by an introduction by Nico de Klerk from the Eye Film Institute. 35mm projection. Pianist: John Kruspe.



June 16, 2010, at the Revue Cinema, 400 Roncesvalles Ave., Toronto
7.00-8.30pm

Library and Archives Canada presents EARLY CINEMA TREASURES, including:
• William James Sr.’s newsreel footage covering Toronto’s transition from leisure to wartime, 1912-1916;
• “Vancouver and Victoria St. and Harbour Scenes” (1907), a Hale’s Tour travelogue of Canada.

The screenings will feature narration by archivist DJ Turner, who will also discuss his work restoring Canada’s film heritage. DVD projection. Pianist: William O’Meara.
