At this annual festival in Winston-Salem, NC there will be some screenings of particular interest to silent and talkie film fans including "The Emperor Jones", "Cry Danger" and "This Happy Breed".
My good friend Gil Frey, one of the founder's of Greensboro's F-Art Ensemble, will be accompanying John Ford's "Upstream" and "Lonesome". With "Lonesome", they'll be repeating a successful experiment from earlier this year, showing the print that includes the talking sequences with the live music pausing for them.
A significant highlight will be "Santa Fe Satan" (aka "Catch My Soul"), the only directorial effort by "Prisoner" star Patrick McGoohan. The film is an early 70s rock musical version of "Othello" starring Richie Havens and was until fairly recently thought by many to be lost. According to Gil, the studio (Fox, I believe) only had the original negative for half the film and a print of the other half was finally located.
