Shazam told me #1 is "Stockholm Stomp," by Fletcher Henderson and his band. Other YouTube videos verify it. Google search hits give a recording date of January 22, 1927 and release on Brunswick 3460.

A Google search comes up with October 13, 1928 as the recording date for the Chocolate Dandies number, released on Okeh 8668.

Shazam couldn't come up with any match for the 12th Street Rag; no luck with SoundHound, either.

Thanks Paul. I did search Youtube for Stockholm Strut, instead of "Stomp". I did do a Google search on Birmingham and could not find a recording date, just a bunch of sites selling jazz cds and downloads.

I'm in the midst of updating my music database, so I've been making a lot of searches for recording info, and you do have to sift through all the hits for sellers for the occasional documentary reference. One thing you might try is restricting a Google search to Books - you won't get hits for sellers, and quite a few discographies and music histories have good-sized previews that turn in hits for your searches.

Here's an example of a hit from a book, one of the ones I found for Birmingham Breakdown:

I find it helpful to put the name of the artist and the song title in quotes, e.g. "birmingham breakdown" "chocolate dandies" together in the search box.

The most comprehensive source for information on jazz recordings (recording dates, 78 rpm issues et al) up to 1942 is Jazz and Ragtime Records by the late Brian Rust, several editions of which were published from 1961 to 2002. The 1917-34 entries from the last revision are available as a free download at the following link:
