The BBC really shot themselves in the foot, wiping all those episodes and recording over them to save money on tape. Monty Python's Flying Circus nearly shared the same fate. Fortunately, Terry Jones had the foresight to buy the masters so the Beeb could buy new tape.That episode was never put into syndication which meant the video was never telerecorded to film. It need not be lost. Some BBC viewers actually filmed programmes off the screen with film cameras. They tended to be as secretive about their recordings as some collectors of silent film, because until well into the age of the VCR it was actually illegal in Britain to record television programmes. I only know of people who may have recorded short scenes as someone did in Australia in the 1970s or possble off screen stills. I have not heard of anyone who actually recorded entire episodes on film. Of course there are the people who recorded all the episodes on audio and that is how we have all missing episodes existing on audio. Don't think that is true. Peter Cook was the one who wanted to buy his master tapes but wasn't allowed to.
