This 36-chapter serial comes from Australian radio and was created by George Edwards, who was a major broadcast celebrity "down under" from the 1930s through his death in the 1950s. Edwards' versatility at playing several characters in distinctly different voices, even conversing between characters, earned him the title of "The Man of a Thousand Voices." Hearing this serial in 1934, listeners could not help but picture Lon Chaney speaking as Quasimodo. Today, although images of Charles Laughton, Anthony Quinn, and other fine actors who have since played the Hunchback compete in our imagination, I'd say it is still Lon Chaney we envision as we hear these vintage broadcasts.
