Obit in The Guardian

Still processing ... what an amazing actor, you could never take your eyes off him, no matter what the role, or the stage in his career.

I doubt we'll see a screen presence like him again.

Glad the obit mentioned Under the Volcano -- he was the whole film, and managed to pump some life into what would otherwise have been a foredoomed version of a great unfilmable novel. (I liked the film, mind you, but without Finney it never would have stood a chance of catching anything like Malcolm Lowry's spirit.)

Grim film, but Finney makes it worthwhile, and I agree that even though my fave director, John Huston, made it, I can't think of any other actors from the time who could have pulled it off.

It's best seen in tandem with the NFB/Donald Brittain documentary about Lowry, Volcano: An Inquiry Into the Life and Death of Malcolm Lowry.

Phew, my local library has the Criterion Collection edition of Under the Volcano, and it includes the NFB documentary about Lowry as a bonus feature. Can't wait to revisit (this is much better than my old pan & scan MCA Universal laserdisc copy).

Wonderful actor, truly one of the icons of 1960's cinema. RIP.

And not surprised that most of the tv coverage of his death was quite brief - two of the three major networks nightly news, Entertainment Tonight) all highlighted his being Daddy Warbucks in ANNIE and a supporting player in a Julia Roberts vehicle as his main claim to fame, completely ignoring any pre-1980 films including, incredibly, star as the title role in TOM JONES, a Best Picture Oscar winner.

Yes, where would Finney be without Julia Roberts?

I thought he was a superlative Scrooge, a role which was hardly mentioned in any obit.
