As far as I know, all prints of OUR DANCING DAUGHTERS are soft. I've seen a very old 16mm rental print and it was the same. Unless there is archival material sourced from a different 35mm print, I don't believe there is anything better.

Yep, and all existing prints of OUR DANCING DAUGHTERS have that printed in hair, too. MGM gets kudos for instituting a program fairly early on to transfer all their nitrate to safety film, but sad to say, their lab work was not all that great. I knew a fellow who worked in the MGM lab back in the 1960s and 70s and he said a lot of the work was rushed. MGM wanted the stuff copied, but they wanted it done quickly and spending the least amount of money.

The OUR DANCING DAUGHTERS nitrate was already starting to go and all that we are left with is the print you see on the Warner Archive DVD.
Oh my God!! Can you believe this... I actually watched "OUR DANCING DAUGHTERS" on my old DVD-R that someone from the US had copied for me in 2005! I've not watched it since then really??? Anyway, I put it on and was really disappointed with the quality, it was terrible. Loads of dirt particles everywhere, soft picture, jump splices, no stabilization of picture.

And YES -- I saw that "printed in Hair" that you mention in the bottom left hand corner of the screen!! I thought it was just my copy -- but you say it's actually on the official Warner Archive Collection copy too!??!?! That's really bad isn't it! I wonder why "Dancing Daughters" is in such bad condition, whereas the other two, "Modern Maidens" and "Blushing Brides" are in excellent condition?? Weird?

I'm not waiting any of that. Warners have ownership, even though the films are in the public domain, of all of the Carlos Gardel productions for Paramount.

Until those films are published, Warner Archive is a waste of money for me... not to mention that they also own 400 feature films from Argentina that, for the most part, are in the public domain too.

I take the above comment back. The 1943 Desert Song is an awful movie!

When MGM preserved the film back in the 70s, they didn't bother to clean or otherwise prep the print beforehand. After this copy was made, the original nitrate was stupidly tossed. So yes, all prints of ODD look like this and always will, unless Warners is crazy enough to do a full digital clean-up of a movie that would only sell a couple of hundred copies.

Do you mean the ones with Shemp Howard as Knobby Walsh? They were released eight months ago -- in this collection.

He may have been referring to the 12 film Monogram series from 1946-1951.

I want all of the Carlos Gardel movies. The films are in the public domain, but Warner Bros. owns the best film elements available.

Me too. WA offers payment by Paypal now but when I clicked on that option, nothing happened. I used old fashioned plastic.

I had the same problem, Bob. Thought it might be my computer but after trying several different ones I got the same result. Finally gave up and used plastic as well. I hope they get that resolved. I'd much prefer to use PayPal because the funds come directly from my bank account as opposed to my CC. It helps keep my spending in check.

I tried to use Paypal from both computer and iPad - no go. I'm reluctant to use a cc since my account was hacked via an order that I placed last year. I finally called and spoke to a person so that I could report the Paypal problem (which seemed to be the first that she'd heard of it), then placed the order using an alternate cc that I rarely use. At least my main cc won't be hacked, and I'll know definitely that this usage was the source of the problem since I haven't used that card since last year. Someone on HTF reported that his card was hacked after placing an order recently, so the problem is apparently still going on.

Disturbing to hear this since I was forced to use my CC.

I'll wait for either Amazon or Deep Discount DVD to offer the Why Be Good DVD. I may be paying a few dollars more, but I'm still unnerved after having my credit card info hacked last year after purchasing from the WB website.

It may not make any difference but I never check the option for saving my cc info on the WB site. I think that allowing them to store this info creates risks if their own site is hacked. But maybe it doesn't matter. Paypal is my preferred way of paying online.

I got a call from my bank earlier this year to tell me they cancelled my CC. They told me there was evidence my card was skimmed or details compromised almost immediately after I did a purchase with Deep Discount. Not sure what really happened as this was the only CC transaction I did in that period and it was online. The bank representative only questioned the Deep Discount purchase but gave no other details. Luckily though inconvenienced I did not lose money. I now always feel a lot safer with Paypal.

That's disturbing. I haven't used Deep Discount in well over a year. I'll have to consider the Paypal route with the Warner Archive.

Good luck with that, unless they get the current problem resolved. I much prefer using Paypal too, after what happened last year.

FWIW, I used PayPal for Warner Archive's 5-for-$50 sale on Oct. 10 and it went through without a hitch.

Everytime I've used PayPal in the past it always has worked fine, except for this last transaction last Tuesday.
